Udupi : Prior to the monthly general body meeting of the Udupi City Municipal Council, the issue of ban on protests and public meetings at Clock Tower, Jatka Stand and Service Bus Station was the issue during the meeting on Thursday, 28^th September, 2017.

The issue was raised by the opposition member Yaspal Suvarna and said that additional DC has issued a notification that the district administration has permanently banned protests and public meetings at three places in the heart of the city with several reasons specially affecting large number of people, ambulances and fire tenders at the time of emergencies. It has been very bussy junction in the Udupi city for all. But Yaspal Suvarna argues that the said issue should be consult with the elected representatives prior to sending the report by the district administration. Without knowing the CMC, how the Assistant Commissioner as well as the commissioner of CMC sent the report to the deputy commissioner.

The opposition as well as the ruling members demanded the alternative place for protest and meetings for the cause of public at large. Yaspal Suvarna in particular demanded to revoke the ban order in said places or otherwise give the place to protests and public meetings at the heart of the city.

Ramesh Kanchan ruling councilor argues that it was the direction from former district in charge Minister Dr. V. S. Acharya to organize public meetings and protest meet near to DC office at Manipal.

Meenakshi Madhav Bannanje President of CMC said that CMC has no role to the said issue. The order was issued after considering the report from the SP and Police department.

Janardhan Bhandarkar, ruling party member said that he was conducted various public meetings and protests since more than 25 years in these places. Protests are being organized before to make the public awareness on certain issues. If members of the public only protest in front of the DC office, it will not reach large numbers of public, but only for DC only. He said the way the district administration given order is condemnable one. The district administration prior to the order should consult the elected representatives of the CMC that the protests normally held in these three places. The ruling as well as the opposition members support the Janardhan Bhandarkar’s view and decided to send proposal which was passed by the CMC meeting to the deputy commissioner.

Prior to the resolution, the Municipal Commissioner Manjunathaiah read out the order from the higher officials.

Next prominent issue raised by both ruling and opposition members in regard to situation of roads in the CMC areas. Most of the members complained to the chair about the worst situation of the road and demanded to repair with patch works or whatsoever may be immediately.

Meenakshi Madhav Bannanje said that she directed the engineers to prepare the estimation of all the 35 wards and then after rain stops over, the damaged roads will be repaired soon.

Vasanthi Shetty opposition councilor of Ambalpady said that the buses are blocking the road after the Bye pass of NH66 which problems the people. Members of the public will construct the bus stand near the bye pass which will help lot of people.

Shyam Kudva opposition councilor said that Janasamparka meetings conducted by whom?, Who giving statements to the media? In just concluded Janasamparka meeting being a local councilor, completely neglected. Janasamparka will be conducted for the political gain by the ruling party.

Ramesh Kanchan and other members pointed out the water leakage in various places in the heart of the city and need immediate solution.

In order to check the population of the street dogs, Raghavendra said that the CMC had taken the programme of sterilizing more than thousands dogs to check their population. He told to Geetha Sheth opposition councilor that as per the rules, the sterilized dogs had to be left back in the places where they were picked after the sterilization operation.
