Udupi : The atmosphere of honor and love for the senior citizens should get in every houses of the country, said Pramod Madhwaraj, Minister of State for Fisheries, Sports, Youth Empowerment and district in-charge Minister.

He was speaking on the inaugural occasion of Senior Citizen’s Day organized at Ravindra Kalyan Mantap, MGM College here by District Administration, Zilla Panchayat, Women and Children Development Department, Handicap and Senior Citizen’s Empowerment Department, District Legal Services Authority, Udupi, Udupi Bar Association, Senior Citizen’s Associations Udupi and Udupi Mahila Mandal Okkoota® Old Age Homes, Udupi district on Sunday, 1^st October, 2017.

Pramod Madhwaraj said that it’s not enough with honoring senior citizens in platforms and dais but youth, family members should honor them in every houses with respect and care, then the dream of Rama Raja will be justified.

Now a days we can see people who disturb, trouble and mentally torturing the senior citizens in many houses. Not only that some people misusing the property of senior citizens. It is very much painful to the society. Such youth should think that they also face the same problems what they did for their parents in their last days of life. Youth should develop the character of love and respect to their parents, then the society going to be good.

In Udupi district above 60 years, 25179 senior citizens are identified. In the senior citizens helpline upto now 3463 calls received and 289 complaints recorded and 244 cases were compromised. 4803 senior citizens get old age pension and 67182 persons are getting Sandya Suraksha pensions. The travelling concessions will be applicable for the senior citizens in NURM buses. 10 bed Jeriyatric Ward in District Hospital established with free health facilities for them, said Pramod Madhwaraj.

District Legal Services Authority member secretary Latha also spoke during the occasion and said that we should not forget to give responsible services to our senior citizens. They should not think their future safety. The family should look after them with love and affection. The Supreme Court framed several laws especially for the safety of the senior citizens. During the legal difficulties, advocates will start clinic for the legal advice for the senior citizens in the district. Due to the lack of senior citizens in the families, cases are increased in family matters. The committee will be formed with the help and guidance of district legal services authority for the senior citizens, so that their problems could be solved legally.

During the occasion senior citizens’ were felicitated for their various field’s achievements. They felicitated members are Dr. M. R. Hegde, Dr. B. V. Markande, K. Narasimha Shettigar, Lalitha Naik, P. N. Acharya, Dr. Neri Cornelio and Nandalike Balachandra Rao.  Pramod Madhwaraj feilicitated all these achievers’ as well as Senior Citizens Help Line also.
