Udupi : Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy have planned to organize cultural programmes to mark the Silver Jubilee of the inclusion of Konkani in the eight schedule of the Constitution of India. Already a list of 25 programmes has been planned in different places of State, said R. P. Naik, President of Konkani Sahitya Academy.

He was speaking to media persons during the press meet held at Diana Hotel, here on Sunday, 5^th November said that in relation to silver jubilee of the inclusion of Konkani in the eight schedule, the programmes have already been conducted at seven places like Kumta, Mundugodu, Geru Soppu and Joida, University College. On 19^th December the academy will conduct a big programme in Udupi, Kodikanyana. On 16^th November the programme will be held in Mangaluru. The programmes also will be held at Chikkamagaluru, Hubbali and Belgaum district. The academy has planned to organize promotional programmes and many more community programmes will be conducted in order to promote the Konkani language.

He said that since 23 years, Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy is working with various programmes in order to the empowerment of Konkani language which is speaking by several castes, communities and religions as well. Being the Academy’s main office in Mangaluru, most of the presidents were appointed from the D.K. and Udupi districts even though more people of Uttara Kannanda and other parts of the state people can speak. This is the first opportunity to serve as a President of the Academy from Uttara Kannada district.

Master of Arts (MA) post graduation in Konkani started in Mangalore University last year and only five students have been enrolled so far. In the current academic year nine students has got admission for evening college and the first five students will get a scholarship of Rs. 1.5 lac every year.

There will be Mobile Bazar hosted to read Konkani books for those who want to read Konkani books in order to promote Konkani language. International level convention on multiple language will be held in the first week of February 2018 to mark the 150 year anniversary celebrations of Manglore University and Rs 5 crore has been reserved in the budget for this programme.

We also demanded separate Konkani Community Bhavan and to have an office in its own building. We have asked the government to approve this project and hopeful to get the community Bhavan at Mangaluru.

He said Goa University is the first university that MA course while Mangalore University is the second one. About 41 communities has been speaking Konkani language.

Devdas Pai, Registrar, Amrith Shenoy, member of the Mangaluru Academic Council and Janardhan Bhandarkar were present during the press meet.
