Manipal : Department of Commerce, MAHE, would be hosting a one day seminar sponsored by the National Commission for Women, New Delhi, on Saturday, 24^th April. This would be a major step towards throwing some light on the concept of unpaid care work especially done by women.

Unpaid care work includes all kinds of activities centered on caring for one’s family such as children, elders, disabled members of the family. It also includes managing the household activities like cooking, cleaning etc. Traditionally these kind of work predominantly done by the women of the household have not been considered under the category of work which requires wages. However, there hasbeen recent changes in the mindset of people resulting in varying opinions.

The seminar aims to act as a guiding tool for the researchers, academicians and other stakeholders. The seminar will focus on different dimensions of the unpaid care work done by women in the growing economy and the existing gender gap in the labor market.

The main topics that would be discussed are the following;

1) What is unpaid care work?

2) Balancing the role of women in paid and unpaid work.

3) Unpaid care work as an obstacle to women economic empowerment (3R’s – Recognize, Reduce and Redistribute).

4) Importance of Unpaid care work of women in families.

5) Unpaid care work and its impact on the economy.

6) Methods to handle the unpaid care work to improve the country’s GDP.

7) Palliative care as an unpaid care work in families.

8) Employment strategies to overcome the gender gap.

The seminar can be attended by students, academicians, researchers, industry experts, NGO, SHG and housewives.

The seminar would be inaugurated by Dr. Poornima Baliga, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Health Sciences, MAHE. The inaugural function would be held at 9:30 am, on March 24^th, 2018 at Interact Hall, MAHE.
