Udupi : Jackfruit limited consumption would helpful and control of diabetic disease. The farmers should take interest to produce of Jackfruit, said Raghupathy Bhat, Udupi MLA.

He was speaking during his presiding over the programme of two days Jackfruit Mela at Doddanagudde here on Saturday, 23^rd June, organized by District administration, Zilla Panchayat and Sri Khstra Dharmasthala Gramabhivraddi Yojane Udupi, Raghupathy Bhat said that Jackfruit cultivation can easily be produced. Jackfruit can control the diabetic and it would several qualities of medicines also. The farmers should get support to produce the Jackfruit cultivation by the government, he said

Dinakar Babu Zilla Panchayat president was inaugurated the mela and said that the jackfruit is not only edible but also can wood is used to make furniture. Women can increase the income by preparing of various types of jackfruit dishes, he said.

Priyanka Mary Francis, Deputy Commissioner of the district said that one can produce the Jackfruit and other vegetables in the compound of the houses and also can produce vegetables on the terraces of the houses which will helpful for Swachh Bharath mission that by cultivation of trees and vegetables can prevent erosion. The cultivation of vegetables on the premises of houses can helpful to keep health good, she said.

Bhuvaneshwari Deputy director of Horticulture department spoke keynote address and said that in India the cultivation of Jackfruit trees which is neglected one. But in foreign countries the production of the Jackfruit trees becomes commercial. In few places only Jackfruit trees cultivated in Karnataka state. It would be need to give awareness on advantages of Jackfruits and the wood.

There was sweet aroma of jackfruit wafted in the air and different varieties of the fruit were displayed during the Jackfruit mela. Many stalls selling jackfruit and its products were put up at the centre. Large numbers of people were participated during the mela. Products on sale included chips, idli, pickles, pakoras, jackfruit ice cream, pickles and other jackfruit related eatables. There were variety of saplings including Samridhi, Chandra Bakke, Rudikshi, Thailand Pink, Janubakke, Dung Surya, Rudrakshi, Singapura, Gantan, Sindura Super Arli and so on are available for sale.

People surrounded the various stalls to taste the sweet varieties and to purchase them. Two days of Jackfruit mela could help the sale of Jackfruit related dishes and trees.

Kota Srinivas Poojary, MLC, Meenakshi Madhav Bannanje CMC President, Nalini Pradeep Rao Udupi Taluk Panchayat President, Dr. U S Patil of Brahmavar Agriculture Research Centre, Dr. B. Dhananjay Senior Scientist, Purushotam SKDRDP district director, Ashok Kumar Kodgi District Agriculture Society President and others were present during the inaugural programme.
