Udupi : The district Police along with the Udupi district Journalist’s Association and Udupi Press Club jointly organized a two month long awareness programme against Drug Abuse on Saturday, 11^th August, 2018 at Udupi Police Headquarters (SP) office.

The programme was inaugurated by Priyanka Mary Francis, District Deputy Commissioner by pouring water on a coconut plant which will be later planted in the Police district office headquarter premises.

In her inaugural address, Priyanka Mary Francis said that after China, India has the largest population in the world. Among the total population of the country, more than 50 percent are youth between the age of 18 to 35. The youth are new to the world and they do have freedom, but they have lack of understanding. The majority of the youth can use their creative activities and they can build a strong nation. Udupi district is one the famous place to study and students around the globe coming to Udupi for higher education. Some of them are suffer from drug addiction which will be great concern.

Not only that, youths have newly challenges are coming into suicidal tendency. These elements are effecting the youth and easy to destroy the country. Hence, it is good step that the district administration, Police and the media who works together to give awareness to the youth specially in the district, she said.

In his presidential remark, Laxman Nimbargi, District Superintendent of Police said that in order to safety and security of the concerned the country indulged all preparedness. But time is to make safety of Youth which would be important. Udupi district is vibrant district that lots of students are in the higher schools and colleges. Indeed, drug addiction is common in rich and poor students. Money and lack of education is the main cause of drug addiction. Awareness on drug abuse should be necessary to control the drug abuse, he said.

Laxman Nimbargi said that everybody knows that drugs are only available in licensed medical shops. There is no such legal restriction on drug production in countries like Pakistan and Afganisatan. If illegal drugs available at the cost of Rs. 50 in these countries, it may cost at Europe for Rs. 500 and it may cost at US for Rs. 5,000 above. In the sense, drugs are being supplied to our country illegally and which cost more than Pakistan and Afghanistan. Drugs are being destroying young generation in our country. So, indeed there should be awareness on drug abuse needed in order to stop especially student community from habit of addicted drugs, he said.

The chief guest and resource person of the occasion most experienced physician and social worker, Dr. P. V. Bhandary appreciated the motive of police and the media in organizing the one of the best programme. He gave some instances that how one especially highly influenced students who indulged in drug abuse in the district. He gave the role of police as well as the media to give awareness on drug abuse among the young generation. He said there is more curiosity about the drugs. The impact on drug addiction which causes stress on the brain and causing the user to lose control over its consumption, he said.

During the occasion brochures were released in order to give awareness during the month of August and September by the media and policemen. Meanwhile a Facebook page “Say No to Drugs” was launched. There are twelve various programmes to be organized across the district.
