Udupi : NH 66 Toll exemption for local vehicles bearing the registration number KA 20 will continue till end of September at Hejamady and Sasthana toll plazas, as it has been decided in a meeting chaired by DC Priyanka Mary Francis here on Saturday, 18th August.
DC Priyanka Mary Francis called a meeting with NHAI and Navyuga Construction company officials along with elected representatives and leaders of some organizations which about 70 people participated in the meeting. Raghupathy Bhat Udupi MLA, Halady Srinivas Shetty MLA Kundapur, Ansar Ahmed President of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, Shekar Hejamady, Naveenchandra Shetty, Diwakar Shetty, Ramesh Kotian, Abdul Azeez and others participated.
Leaders lambasted at the representatives of Navyuga Construction company for the unilateral decision to levy toll to vehicles of local people from 16th August. The leaders said that not just the police, even if the personnel from the army are deputed at the toll gates to curb the voice of protestors, the locals will not allow for collection of toll for local people at Hejamady and Sasthan toll plazas.
During the meeting, the officials of Construction Company unable to give the answers to a series of queries later agreed to not collect the toll from local people till 30th September.
DC Priyanka Mary Francis said that the NHAI officials have complained the Chief Secretary of the state government that Udupi District DC and Superintendent of Police are not supporting the NHAI’s toll collection job at Hejmady and Sasthan toll plazas. She also said that we from the district administration cannot instruct to stop toll collection.
Later the people representatives and NHAI officials mutually agreed that a meeting should be convened in the first week of October before taking any decision on collection of toll for vehicles of local people after 30th September.
