Udupi : Eid – Ul – Adha also popularly known as Bakrid is a significant festival celebrated by Muslims all over the district. The celebrations began with special prayers (Namaz) being offered at various Masjids in the District on Wednesday, August 22.
Muslim priests gave special homily on the festival. Muslim brethren exchanged ‘Eid Mubarak’ whishes and returned home to celebrate the holy festival.
It is one of the two Eids which are celebrated by Muslims, the other Eid being Eid-al-Fitr. However, Eid-Ul-Adha is said to be holier of the two festivals. The festival of Eid-Ul-Adha also called the Festival of Sacrifice and commonly known as Bakri Eid, marks an unshakable obedience towards God. According to the religious scriptures, the festival honours the willings of Ibrahim who obeyed God by sacrificing his son but provided a ram by the end of it. People wish each other Eid Mubarak when they greet each other on this day.
The festival is filled with a lot of fun and laughter as children are given ‘Eidi’ in the form of money, sweets, gifts Etc., They receive blessings from elders. On this day, a goat is sacrificed and the meat is shared as a feast among friends and families.
