Udupi : St Cecily’s Convent and Educational Institutions will be celebrating Centenary celebrations on 29^th and 30^th November, 2018.

Addressing media persons at Udupi Press Club, Sr. Preethi Crasta, A.C.,  Head Mistress of St Cecily’s High School said that St. Cecily’s Educational institutions began in the year on 20^th May, 1918 at Udupi with the intention to provide education to the girls. Then Apostalic Carmel Community leader Sr. Elvishi along with four nuns from Mangaluru began this institution at Udupi. In order to give support for the institution, the role of then parish priest of Udupi church Rev Fr. Casmir Menezes and locals Piadad Alva, Sebastian Andrade, Adam Saheb and Valerian Pais was appreciated, she said.

Since beginning the institution gave education for the local girls in English and Kannada medium schools and along with that stitching, cooking, Horticulture, preparation of handmade materials etc and gave value based education as well. In the year 1922, for the outstation and far away girls started boarding facilities and give chance to them to study in our institution. Meanwhile primary classes started for even boys also, she said.

St. Cecily’s School which was opened in May 1918 with the first three classes had a steady growth over the years and it was fully fledged High School in 1933. In 1946 Kannada was adopted as the medium of instruction. However the parents wanted an English Medium School for their children. In compliance with the request of the parents, a private school of English Medium was started in 1959. In the campus with 24 pupils on roll from classes 1 to 111. In 1965 the school obtained permission to open Std 1 to IV in 1966 recognition was obtained from the Education department and in the consecutive years other classes V to VII were opened. Until 1978 the administration was looked after by the head of the High School and in 1978 an independent Headmistress was appointed. As strength increased a new block was constructed in 1991.

The school has made a mark in the history of Udupi, blessed with an excellent faculty. St Cecily’s is progressing rapidly. The school provides a number of co-curricular activities. Students have excelled in sports and have brought laurels to the school. The PTA collaborates and supports in every programme and activity, making the school a large family. The students who have moved out of this institution have made a mark in the society as loyal citizens contributing their share for the peace and progress of humanity.

Sr. Preethi said that on occasion of the centenary celebrations, on Thursday, November 29, blessing of the centenary memorial block will be inaugurated by Most Rev Dr. Peter Paul Saldanha, Bishop of Mangalore at 4.45 pm followed by cultural programme at school grounds at 5 pm.

Most Rev Dr. Gerald Isaac Lobo will preside the occasion and Sr. M. Susheela A C Superior General, Apostolic Carmel will be the chief guest. Guests of honor are Dinakar Babu President, Zilla Panchayat Udupi, Oscar Fernandes MP, Rajya Sabha, K. Raghupathy Bhat MLA, Udupi, Pramod Madhwaraj former minister, Vinay Kumar Sorake former minister, Nalini Pradeep Rao President of Udupi taluk panchayat, Rashmi C Bhat Corporator, Ajjarkad Udupi, Priyanka Mary Francis DC, Subramany Joshi, DDPI Udupi, Lokeshappa BEO, Udupi, G. Shanker of G. Shanker Family Trust, Sr. Carmel Rita AC, Provincial Superior, Very Rev Fr. Valerian Mendonca, Parish priest of Udupi church will present.
