Udupi : Over 18,000 free LPG connections have been issued under the Pradhan Mantri Ujwala Yojana (PMUY) in the Udupi district so far, applications have been invited for issuance of connections under the scheme to below poverty line (BPL) households who do not have LPG conection.

Speaking to media persons during the press meet at Udupi Press Club here on Friday, December 28, PMYU district Nodal Officer H C Krishna said that in the Udupi district, Karnataka IOC has released 2657, BPC 5486 and HPC 7265 that is total 15418 number of beneficiaries have been provided with LPG connection under the scheme till date.

He said that in order to give a universal reach of clean cooking fuel LPG in the country, the Union government has given a latest decision to release deposit free LPG connections to poor families, who were not getting considered earlier for release of LPOG connections under the PMUY on account of their names not appearing either in Socio-Economic Caste Census list or the seven identified categories. Now, the identified poor households who were deprived to avail the scheme benefits for want of not appearing in SECC list or not able to certify their eligibility in seven categories, he said.

He said today district has covered 273177 households with LPG as cooking fuel and district LPG coverage stands at 96% as against earlier coverage of 85% as on 01.04.2016. 97%beneficiaries under the scehme, who could not afford to make upfront payment for purchase of gas stove and first refill, were provided loan facility by the OMCs.

H. C. Krishna said that it is significant to mention that 90% of PMUY beneficiaries in the district have comeback for refill of LPG cylinder after the connection released and the average per capita consumption is 4.48 cylinders per annum.

He said that below poverty line families that do not have LPG connections can submit their applications at a nearby LPG agency. The applicants should submit their Aadhaar Card, bank account details and a self-declaration form.
