Udupi : Prelude to Annual Feast of Our Lady of Miracles. “Madi Fest” was observed at Milagres Cathedral, Kallianpur near here  and declared open the Annual Feast – 2019 by hoisting the Milagres Flag.

Madi Fest was celebrated on Sunday before the start of Nine days Novena services which commence on Monday, January 14, 2019. The annual parish feast to be celebrated on 22^nd January and 23^rd January, 2019.

As per the tradition since centuries, on account of the annual parish feast, Madi Fest was celebrated by hoisting Our Lady of Miracles flag which was held this year also. The parish priest of the church as well as Rector of the Cathedral of the diocese Very Rev Dr. Lawrence C D’Souza was hoisted the Milagres flag after the morning mass at 8 am.

During the occasion along with the Vicar, assistant parish priest Rev Fr. Canute Noronha, Rev Fr. Lancy Fernandes sj, Dr. Nery Cornelio Vice president of parish pastoral council, Felciana Lewis secretary, Xavier Fernandes, Coordinator of 18 commissions of the church, parish council members and parishioners’ were present.

The historical Madi Fest tradition has been celebrated by our ancestors since three centuries at Our Lady of Miracles Church, Kallianpur. By local tradition, it is called “Kodi Yeroni” in Tulu language for the preparation of the annual grand festival of Our Lady of Miracles church. The traditional custom is celebrated with 9 days of Novena prayers for Our Lady of Miracles. In front of the church premises, parish flag with a portrait of picture of Our Lady of Miracles was hoisted at the top end of an Areca nut tree (Madi) pole. Even after the Milagres Church becomes Cathedral of the Udupi Diocese, the same custom has continued to commemorate the tradition of Madi Fest. But presently instead of Areca nut tree, silver coated pole will be used to hoist the flag.

The Confraternity Sunday will be observed this year on Sunday, 20^th January, 2019 which Eucharistic mass will be held at 4 pm. After the brief adoration of Holy Eucharist, procession will be started from the Cathedral to Ozanum Home for the Aged premises. The blessing of Holy Eucharist and brief prayers will be held at Ozanam Home for the aged premises.

On account of annual feast of Our Lady of Miracles Cathedral, Vespers will be celebrated on Tuesday, 22^nd January at 6.30 pm. The Eucharistic celebrations of the annual feast will be started from 10.30 am after the distributions of candles for donours and benefactors at 10 am sharp.
