Udupi : Maralu Horata Samiti, Udupi along with other organizations staged indefinite day and night protest in front of DC office, Rajathadri, Manipal here on Monday, January 28 to demand permission for all 171 license holders.

Addressing to media persons, Raghupathy Bhat Udupi MLA said that the district administration should take permission from Bangaluru Forest, Environment and other concerned secretaries for already issued 171 license holders to extract the sand in CRZ areas. We demand to get licenses to all the license holder and we are going to stage indefinite protest till all license holders get permit to sand extraction, he said.

We demand to start sand mining in the district and overcome the crisis at the earliest. The price of the sand is increasing up to Rs. 15,000 for three units. It is district administration’s responsibility to get approval from Karnataka Coast Zone Management. The construction has completely collapsed in Udupi and it should give permission to extract sand in eco-sensitive area, he said.

Lalaji Mendon Kaup MLA said that due to acute shortage of rain in North Karnataka severe draught situation over there and in Udupi due to sand crisis, total crisis in all fields situated. Due to the shortage of raw materials for the construction field, the development works collapsed in Udupi district. The district administration should liberate the laws in relate to sand extraction, he said.

Devi Prasad Shetty, Congress leader said it would very difficult if we see the legal matters on extraction of sand. The protest against the district administration to make avail of sand for justice of the people. Plenty of poor people difficult to survive due to sand crisis, he said.
