Udupi : In order to keep control of illegal activities like sand mining, matka and others, we will form special police team in the district, said Nisha James, Superintendent of Police.

In her first phone-in programme on Friday, March 1, after she assumed office, SP Nisha James said that additional responsibilities are given to the police to restrain the illegal activities. The laws changed in relate to illegal sand mining. As per the latest directions from the court after the capturing the illegal sand transport, police will hand over the case to Mines and Geology department to furnish the details to the court, she said.

She said under the new beat system, the police should do their job with honest to curb illegal activities. If the beat police to fail their honest work, then the local PSI should take responsibility. Even though the beat police as well as PSI of connected police station failed to restrain the illegal activities, then special district level police officers will take care of such illegal activities and action will be taken to those police officers’ to fail their responsibilities, she said.

One caller near Billadi near Brahmavar said that Billadi Gram Panchayat president using his car number plate of other car. He is using car bearing registration number KA 20 MB 4856 belongs to Santhosh Shetty. Gram Panchayat president has illegally involved by using other car number plate. SP said action will be taken against user of the car as per the motor vehicle act.

A women caller complained SP that ration rice of Annabagya scheme sold to others illegally at Byndoor in every month.

In relate to traffic and motor vehicles, several calls received by SP during the phone-in programme. Vehicles parking on the service road of NH 66, over speed of vehicles near city and service bus station, without any signal, suddenly vehicles stopping at Hiriyadka, car parking in various places in the city limit, seat occupying  for senior citizens in the buses by others, no registration number inside the private buses, not covering the soil carrying lorries while on transport, opposite direction movement of vehicles on NH 66 at Udyavara and other matters in relate to vehicles traffic issues.

After the previous phone-in programme, 5 Matka case registered and 5 people were arrested, 4 gambling cases were registered and 24 persons were arrested. Three arrested for illegal liquor sale case, in NDPS case 3 persons arrested, 109 cases registered in COTPA, 35 cases registered in drunk driving, shrill horns 520 cases, 132 cases for using mobile while driving, 3249 cases for without helmet driving by two wheelers, 140 cases for over speed and 7001 cases for other cases registered under Motor Vehicles Act.

During the first phone-in programme by newly appointed SP Nisha James received 23 calls from the public in the district.
