Udupi : Water would be supplied once in three days in Udupi city limit from Monday, March 25, 2019, said Deputy Commissioner of district Hephsiba Rani Korlapati.

Addressing media persons at Udupi Press Club here on Saturday, March 23, DC said that she had carried out a study of the water situation in the city limit and gone through the steps taken by the authorities in the previous years to tackle water shortage in the city.

She said that she had held discussions with the Udupi City Municipal officers. The Udupi City Municipal Council would soon issue a media notification detailing the steps to tackle the water situation in the city.

To a query about the water scarcity in rural areas, she said that gram panchayats had been directed to give most importance to tackle the drinking water situation thereof. They had been told to provide water through tankers in water scarcity areas. Meanwhile, those who supply water tankers, it should need to equip with GPS equipment. The GPS would necessary that it was also possible to track the source of water, with the intention being to provide safe drinking water also, she said.

As far as drinking water supply in tankers, the issue had been almost resolved in Kundapur and Karkala taluks as tenders had been floated and water was being supplied through tankers in those places. But there had been a slight delay in Udupi taluk, she said.

To a query, on the steps that the district administration would take in the light of the National Green Tribunal order with regard to the 1,200 MW coal-based thermal power plant of Udupi Power Corporation Ltd., at Yellur in Udupi district, DC said that the district administration had not received the order of the judgment copy so far. But she had read reports about it in the media. Some other government agencies were involved in it. The district administration would look into the matter and take appreciate action, she said.
