Udupi : Wearing of seat belts was compulsory while driving four wheelers and also helmets wearing compulsory for two wheelers, said Nisha James, Superintendent of Udupi District Police.

Speaking to media persons during the phone-in programme held at District Police office here on Friday, May 31, Nisha James said that it would wrong to think that seat belts compulsory only at commissionaire areas, as per the traffic rules wearing seat belt compulsory while car driving even non-commissionaire areas. An awareness week would be launched in the district in relate to the traffic rules and regulations, she said.

Nisha James said that a proposal had been submitted to National Highway Authority of India to install signal lights on NH 66 as well as NH 169A in Udupi district. The most traffic junction conjunction at Padubidri, Katpady, Udyavara Balaipade, Ambalpady, Santhekatte, Kundapur, Tallur and Hemmady on NH66. Meanwhile a proposal also had been submitted to the NHAI division of Public Works Department, overseeing the widening of NH 169A to install the signal lights at Malpe junction, Karavali junction, Bannenjejunction, Shiribeedu junction, MGM College, Syndicate junction, Tiger Circle and MIT junction.

To a query, SP said that it was necessary to lift the wreckage of Suvarna Tribhija boat which had sunk off Malwan Coast in Maharastra on December 15, 2018. The wreckage was found by the Navy on May 1, 2019 and this would help in doing its physical examination. Since it was not possible for the Navy to lift the wreckage of the boat, it had become need to take government help to lift the wreckage of the boat with the help private agencies, she said.

Nisha James said that in order to ascertain the speed of the boat, direction and main cause of the sinking of the boat, physical verification of the boat would be possible only after lifting the wreckage of the sinking boat, she said.

One caller said that the bus stand near the gate of Government Hospital, Ajjarkadu need to shift other place that lot of college students and rickshaw stand nearby, it would be difficult to enter the hospital. In response, SP said that with discussion with the CMC officials, the action will be taken.

The Auto Rickshaws in Udupi city, charging more fair from the passengers than the official fixed prices. Even there are meters in the autos, but meters are not using by the auto driver and charging excess charges. SP said meeting will be conducted with the auto drivers as well as with RTO. Meanwhile, the rate of auto rickshaw charges will be reconsidered if needed, she said.

In relate to traffic and transport complaints dominated the police phone-in programme today. The calls in relate to illegal parking at various places in the district, traffic problems, parking at Malpe bus stand by large vehicles like cars and bikes and other traffic related issues.

One caller from Gangolli complained that illegal sand mining held at early in the morning and late in the night . SP said the action will be taken to illegal sand extraction in the district.

Udupi DySP Jaishanker, Udupi Circle Inspector Manjunath, Kundapur DySP Dinesh, Kaup Circle Inspector Shantharam, Traffic Police SI Nithyananda Gowda and other police officials were present.
