Mahabharata reflects complexity society – as it is’ Vidvan Tholpadi
Mahabharata reflects complexity society – as it is’ Vidvan Tholpadi
“It is empathy that makes an individual. The one, who is empathetic, will be able to understand and accept the world as it is. Vedavyasa, who is the author of Mahabharata and 18 Puranas of 500,000 verses, is such an individual” stated Vidvan Lakshmisha Tholpadi while speaking at the lecture ‘Mahabharata and Philosophical Thoughts’ organised by the Department of Philosophy of MAHE at Manipal on July 22.
Vidvan Tholpadi continued that it is even evident in “the Vedas, compiled by Vyasa, wherein the very first Rgveda verse says ‘it is adored by the ancient and the modern, what is - as it is’. Vedavyasa also stated the same that ‘Mahabharata depicts the world as it is’. It retains in its narratives the natural complexity of the society, which is why Mahabharata is beautiful, thoughtful and an Itihasa-kavya. This is my stance”, he concluded addressing at the Manipal Mahabharata Lecture Series of MAHE Mahabharata Digital Concordance Project (www.mahabharata.manipal.edu). The lecture by Vidvan Tholpadi is seventh in the series, which hosted lectures by scholars of international repute like Bannanje, Aklujkar, Guha, Falques, Sudyka and Capkova from India and abroad.
“National and international institutions do certainly owe a responsibility of encouraging researches in classical studies and it is honestly appreciated that an Institution of Eminence – Manipal has taken up that responsibility in providing further research facilities through technological advancements. And it is our responsibility also to encourage and support such endeavours and we express our (Vedavyasa Samshodhana Kendra) happiness for collaborating with MAHE in the Mahabharata Digital Concordance Project taken by the Department of Philosophy and urge them to take up other classical works as well, further”, spoke Pujya Sri Vidyaprasanna Tirtha Svamiji of Kukke Subrahmanya Matha during his presidential remarks.
“I have seen the transformation of a research centre for Dvaita philosophy into a full-fledged Department of Philosophy, within a decade, able to offer degree programs. It is now introducing a Master’s in Indian philosophy endorsing comparative perspectives along with its other activities - projects, events and publications. It has been gathering all the resources and is creating platforms for discussions on eastern and western philosophies. It has received international scholars’ support towards its initiatives and would soon brim the campus with intellectual vibrancy – I believe”, expressed Prof Dr Neeta Inamdar, the Jean Monnet Chair and the Head of Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence – European Studies Department in her speech as Guest of Honour.
As a University, MAHE is committed not only to Health and Technical Sciences but also to Liberal Arts. As also the new NEP draft envisions, the University endorses studies and research in niche areas like Indian philosophy and Sanskrit studies and motivates us to bridge the interface between traditional and modern studies and scholars, said Srinivasa Acharya, Head of Philosophy Department in his welcome speech, as his colleagues - Dr Anandateertha compered the event and moderated the discussion with Tholpadi, while Dr Arjuna delivered vote of Thanks.
