Udupi : The district police would take all precautionary measures to put break on illegal activities and other various activities at Ajjarkad Park here, said Nisha James, IPS, District Superintendent of Police.

Speaking to media persons during police phone-in programme at District Police Headquarters, Nisha James said in reply to a caller that a lot of illegal activities have been going on near Ajjarkad Park. The police would do a day beat and night beat at the park. It would ask the Udupi City Municipality to improve lighting inside as well as around the park. The installation of CCTV cameras at the park would be taken up with the municipality, she said.

One caller informed the police about overcharging fare by autorickshaws from the travelers’. Nisha James said that there were may complaints regarding excess fare being charged by auto drivers. Hence, the district police along with the Regional Transport Office would soon launch a drive against overcharging by auto rickshaws.

There was a meeting with Auto Unions and the district administration along with police. As per their unions, they are still charging the minimum rate decided a few years ago. But, their maintenance costs have increased. However, Nisha James said that till the minimum rate is revised, the drivers have to charge the rate fixed earlier.

Several callers complained about the increase of Matka business in the district, especially at Gangolly, Kundapura and Udupi city limits. SP asked the concerned police officials to take immediate actions on these illegal matka businesses.

One caller from Padubidri complained about the encroachment of road, hence problem especially for school buses during the peak hours. Nisha told that would ask the gram panchayat officials about the encroachment and action would be taken during the peak hours in regard to easy traffic of the area.

One caller from Kolalgiri complained about the sale of liquor in petty shop and also drainage water near the Bar. Nisha James said that action would be taken immediately.

A caller from Shankerpura complained about the overriding bikes near Sarkarigudde here without helmet and creating uneasy to the public.

On a complaint that some transgender people were harassing near the city bus stand, Nisha James said that the district administration had a recent meeting decided to provide identity cards to them and it was also looking into addressing the issue of providing livelihood to them.

One caller informed the police that there was a lot of traffic problems near the Karavali junction as the bus drivers were stopping buses there. Nisha James said that there are problems in relate to bus stands near the NH road all over the district. The district police along with district administration had done a survey on where the bus stands should be located in the city. The administration would issue a notification where the authorized bus stand should be located, she said.

Nisha James said that since July 12 to August 1, in relate to Matka seven cases registered and eight persons arrested. In other gambling 4 cases registered and 27 persons arrested. One case registered and one person arrested in excise related, NDPS 33 cases and 33 persons arrested, 316 Cases in COTPA, Drunken driving 45, Shrill horn 517, use of mobile while driving 20, without helmet 2445, overspeed 40 and other IMV related 7,188 cases were registered.
