Udupi: 80% of people in the district are living in rented houses without their own home. Karnataka slum council and municipal council are all set to make this dream a reality for these families in poverty, said MLA Raghupathi Bhat.

Speaking at a press conference held at Ajjarakadu town hall on Saturday, December 4. Raghupathy Bhat said that the Karnataka slum development board and Udupi municipality have allotted 8.22 acres of land in Sarelebettu to get housing for the homeless.

The Karnataka government’s housing minister, V Somanna, Revenue Minister R. Ashok and Minister for Ports and Inland Water Resources, Kota Srinivasa, will attend the pooja for housing complex on January 8.  He said that Housing Complex is an innovative project developed by the slum board and the municipality, with the collaboration of the central government, state government, municipality and beneficiaries.

At Sarelebettu, already for the housing complex, plot allotted and 460 houses will be built in the first phase and 264 houses in the second phase. Already 1200 eligible beneficiaries have been identified. To build a house of 350 square feet would cost Rs 7,42,994.00 lakh, while the central government would pay Rs 1,50,000.00 lakh to Scheduled Caste, Tribal and General category beneficiaries. 2,00,000.00 lakhs for Scheduled Castes and Tribes beneficiaries and Rs 1,20,000.00 lakh for general category beneficiaries. 60,000 if the beneficiaries belong to the Scheduled Castes and Tribes. And if you belong to the general category you have to pay Rs 90,000.

The municipality will provide a subsidy of Rs 74,299 per household. Bank of Baroda offers loan at 8.25% interest rate and the beneficiaries have completed the loan process. There is a desire to build an all-inclusive housing complex within a year and a half. No other district, apart from Bangalore, has a three-storied housing complex. This will be the first time in Udupi district that all the poor people will be provided with a low-cost housing scheme.

He said that in the next few days, he intends to build 130 houses on 1.12 acres of land at Sannakkibettu and 60 cents 60 houses in Subramanya Nagar.

 Municipal Commissioner Dr Anand C. Kalolikar, Tahsildar Pradeep Kurudekar and others were present during the press conference.
