Udupi : Prelude to Annual Feast of Our Lady of Miracles “Madi Fest” was observed at Milagres Cathedral, Kallianpur near here on January 5, 2020 and declared open the Annual Feast – 2020 by hoisting Milagres Flag.

Every year, Madi Fest has been celebrated on Sunday just prior a day the start of nine days Novena services for Our Lady of Miracles. This year the novena services will commence on Monday, January 6^th, 2020. The annual parish feast to be celebrated this year on 14^th and 15^th January, 2020.

As per the tradition since centuries, on account of the annual parish feast, Madi Fest was celebrated by hoisting Our Lady of Miracles flag which was held this year also. The parish priest of the church as well as Rector of the Cathedral of the diocese Very Rev Dr. Lawrence C.D’Souza was hoisted the Milagres flag after the morning mass at 8 am.

During the day along with the Vicar, assistant parish priest Rev Fr. Canute Norohna, Rev Fr. Lancy Fernandes SJ, Jeffry Dias newly elected Vice President and Felciana Lewis Secretary of new parish pastoral council of the Cathedral, Coordinator of 18 commissions of the church Xavier Fernandes, parish council members and parishioners’ were present.

The historical Madi Fest tradition has been celebrated by our ancestors since three centuries at Our Lady of Miracles Church, Kallianpur. By local tradition, it is called ‘Kodi Yeroni’ in Tulu language for the preparation of the annual grand festival of Our Lady of Miracles church, Kallianpur. The traditional custom is celebrated with 9 days of Novena prayers for Our Lady of Miracles in the morning at the end of the mass. In front of the church campus, parish flag with a portrait of picture of Our Lady of Miracles was hoisted at the top end of an Areca nut tree (Madi) pole. Even after the Milagres Church becomes Cathedral of the Udupi diocese, the same custom has continued to commemorate the tradition of Madi Fest. However, presently since couple of years instead of Areca nut tree, silver coated pole will be used to hoist the parish flag.

The Confraternity Sunday will be observed this year on Sunday, 12^th January, 2019 which Solemnly Eucharistic Mass to be started at 4pm. After the brief adoration of Holy Eucharist, at the end of the mass, the procession will be started from the Cathedral to Ozanam Home for the Aged premises near Goretti Hospital. The blessing of Holy Eucharist and brief prayers will be held Ozanam premises.

On account of annual feast of Our Lady of Miracles, Vespers will be held on Tuesday, 14^th January and Annual feast celebrations will be held on Wednesday, January 15, 2020. This year the main sponsor and firgent is Smt Precilla Lewis and family of Uppoor.
