KARKALA: The Hindu Welfare (Hitharakshana) Forum has complained to the district authorities about the encroachment of more than 70 acres of government land at St. Lawrence Church, Attur. The government land encroachment has destroying the forest, and smuggling millions of timber, demanding that the government take legal action against it.
The public road has been destroyed by the Nitte Panchayat and the public traffic has been affected. A wire fence was placed around the hill. Over 500 acres of adjacent farmland have been destroyed due to the massive hill work that has taken place over the past several years. In the recent rainy season, hundreds of acres of farmland have been flooded with sludge mixed with sludge water from the top of the hill. There have been many appeals to this and nothing has been of benefit.
At the request of the Nitte Panchayat to the Forest Department a year ago, Forest Department officials came and inspected the site. They said that the area is not affiliated with the Forest Department. Therefore, immediately the Department of Revenue should issue a Survey Order to the Government to protect the land and investigate all irregularities in the Church and take strict action against the guilty. In a petition to the district authorities, the Hindu Hitharakshana Vedike has warned that the district will hold a fierce protest if it does not take action within 15 days against illegal building construction, land conservation and destruction of nature.
President of the Hindu Welfare Committee, Karkala unit Ratnakar Amin and Secretary Ramesh Kalotte were also present.
