Manipal : On the occasion of World Glaucoma week 2020, Department of Ophthalmology of Kasturba Medical College and Hospital, Manipal organized Glaucoma screening Program on 9th March 2020, Monday. Theme for the Glaucoma week 2020 is “’B-I-G’ (Beat Invisible Glaucoma)”. 

Glaucoma is a disorder involving gradual and irreversible damage of the optic nerve. It usually occurs because the pressure inside the eye (intraocular pressure) is too high or sometimes, blood supply to the optic nerve is inadequate. It is the most common cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. Glaucoma cannot be cured, however, if it is detected and treated early, blindness can be prevented. Early detection through regular eye examination is extremely important as in most cases it gradually develops without noticeable symptoms. Once diagnosed, it is essential that treatment programmes be rigorously adhered to or blindness can result.

To mark World Glaucoma Week, the department of Ophthalmology of Kasturba Hospital organized Glaucoma screening camp to general public. The program has benefited more than 500 people.

Guest of Honour of the Program, District Health and Family Welfare Officer of Udupi district Dr. Sudhir Chandra Sooda said, "90% of glaucoma problems are overlooked. People who are suffering from glaucoma are not aware of it. This free screening program will offer medication, dietary advice and instructions. The public should take advantage of this and all should undergo regular eye checks, he added”

Chief Guest of the program, Registrar of MAHE Manipal Dr. Narayana Sabahit said “Normally when things are going well we tend to overlook our health. Regular inspection of the eye, along with other organs of the body is essential as soon as one comes of age. This camp is an excellent platform for public. MAHE Manipal not only does educational activities but is also involved in the social welfare program also.

Dr Sharath Kumar Rao, Dean, KMC, Manipal distributed the Certificates. Mr C G Muthana, COO, Kasturba Hospital, Manipal was present in the program. Dr Avinash Shetty, Medical Superintendent, Kasturba Hospital Manipal welcomed the gathering and Dr Sulatha V Bhandary, Head of Dept. of Ophthalmology proposed the vote of thanks, Dr Neetha KIR, consultant glaucoma specialist at Kasturba Hospital, gave an overview on World Glaucoma week 2020. Manipal School of Nursing students performed street play.
