Udupi : Udupi district Mahila Congress staged a protest at Congress Bhavan, Nairkere, here on Thursday, October 1 against the a 19 year old girl was allegedly gang-raped by four in Hathras district, Uttar Pradesh and the victim was forceibly cremated by the police without the consent of her family.

Condemning the cruel incident at UP, Veronica Cornelio said that on September 14, when the victim went to farm collect cattle fodder, the victim was dragged away by dupatta around her neck injuring her spinal cord in the process. The girl was allegedly raped by four upper caste Takur youths. She was left paralyzed with a severe spinal cord injury. The accused had tried to strangulate the girl as she resisted their rape attempt.

On the other hand the victim was cremated on the night between 12am to 3amof September 29 by Uttar Pradesh Police which was done without the family’s consent. The barbaric incident has made the society to bow its head. It was clearly atrocity on women and dalits. Dalit girls are becoming victims of several such incidents and more such cases are coming out from Uttar Pradesh. We can see in every states the rape incidents in recent days. But, after the Yogithyanath taken over as chief minister, the cases of rapes especially in Uttar Pradesh highly increased. This situation should not be repeated, she said.

Jyothi Hebbar senior congress leader said that people are saying that we need Ram Rajya. Leader of BJP used to say that Bheti Bachao, Bheti Padao. But the atrocities on women and young girls by the upper castes to lower castes worst especially in BJP ruled Uttar Pradesh. She said that don’t play with women’s life. She has been the mother to children; she has been a daughter to her parents, she has been a wife of her husband. The women have the right to live. The Uttar Pradesh police was reprehensible for those who are supposed to uphold the law to trample upon the democratic values in such manner that urgently cremated body of victim.

Geetha Wagle, District Mahila Congress President said that shame to Yogi Adithyanath Government at Uttar Pradesh. The law and order situation in the state has been completely broken down. Every day there are plenty of rapes in UP and that also on dalits and other lower caste girls. To respect the Hathras rape victim. Injustice on women will not be tolerated. In Uttar Pradesh, dalits are being meted out with injustice.

Mahila Congress workers lighted candles on respect for the rape victim of UP. Udupi Block Women Congress President Chandrika Shetty, former Udupi CMC President Meenakshi Bannanje, Dr. Sunitha Shetty, Ida Gibba D’Souza and others participated in the protest.
