Udupi : The prelude to Annual Feast of Our Lady of Miracles, “Madi Fest” was observed at the Milagres Cathedral, Kallianpur of the Udupi diocese on Sunday, 10^th January 2021, which declared open the Annual Feast-2021 by hoisting the Milagres Flag.

The so called Madi Fest was celebrated on Sunday prior to the start of nine days Novena for Our Lady of Miracles which commences on the next day i.e. from Monday. This year the nine days novena starts from Monday, January 11 to 19^th January, 2021. The annual parish feast to be celebrated on 19^th and 20^th January 2021 this year.

This year after the mass, the faithful were joined to the celebration of hoisting the parish flag by maintaining covid procedures by faithfully and systematically at the Cathedral campus. After the blessing of Our Lady of Miracles flag by the Rector of Cathedral, Very Rev Fr. Valerian Mendonca conducted the brief prayers and hymn of Mother of Miracles. The Rector was hoisted the parish flag along with Asst. parish priest Rev FR. Canute Noronha, Deacon Nethish, Parish Pastoral Council President Jeffrey Dais and Secretary Felciana Lewis and other parish pastoral council members.

The historical popularly known as Madi Fest tradition has been celebrated by our ancestors since three and half centuries at Our Lady of Miracles Church, Kallianpur now known as Milagres Cathedral of Udupi diocese on South Indian coastal district of Udupi. The traditional custom is celebrated with nine days of Novena prayers for Our Lady of Miracles in the morning at the end of the mass which was attended by large number of faithful. In front of church campus, parish flag with portrait picture of Our Lady of Miracles was hoisted at the top end of an Areca nut tree. Even after the Milagres Church becomes Cathedral of the Udupi diocese, the same custom and tradition has continued to commemorate the tradition of Madi Fest. However, since six or seven years due to the unavailability of Area Nut tree, silver coated pole was used to hoist the parish flag. But this year under the leadership of Rector of the Cathedral, Very Rev Fr. Valerian Mendonca as per the tradition an Areca Nut tree, the parish product utilized for the hoisting the Cathedral flag.

The Confraternity Sunday will be observed this year on Sunday, 17^th January, 2021 which Solemnly Eucharistic Mass to be started at 8am mass. Usually, every year the Confraternity Sunday mass was celebrated at the evening of Sunday with huge Eucharistic procession after the mass.. But this year due to Covid-19 pandemic, the usual Eucharistic procession has been cancelled and instead of evening mass, the Eucharistic mass will be celebrated at 8am mass as per the covid restrictions.

On account of annual feast of Our Lady of Miracles, Vespers will be held at 7pm on Tuesday, January 19, 2021 which this year no candle procession held prior to the Vespers prayers to be started at 7pm sharply. The annual parish feast will be celebrated on Wednesday, January 20 with covid procedures in the Cathedral which begins from 10.30am. This year the feast has been celebrated by the parishioners of Milagres Cathedral, Kallianpur. Jai Milagres.
