Manipal, 20th March 2021: The Surgical Oncology of Kasturba Medical College and Hospital, Manipal under the Manipal Comprehensive Cancer Care Centre conducted the CME on Colorectal Cancers on 20th March 2021, Saturday. Dr H S Ballal, Pro-Chancellor of MAHE was the chief guest of the program, Dr PLNG Rao Pro-Vice Chancellor, MAHE, Manipal was the guest of honour of the program. Dr Sharath Kumar Rao, Dean KMC, Dr Avinash Shetty, Medical Superintendent, Kasturba Hospital, Dr Navin S Salins, Coordinator, MCCCC and Dr Naveena Kumar AN Head Department of Surgical Oncology were present in the Program.

To cater to the growing number of cancer survivors, Dr H S Ballal inaugurated the colorectal cancer survivorship program in this occasion and said, Kasturba Hospital is committed to providing the best of the services with no compromise on the quality. Organising this kind of Continuing Medical Education Programs will help in updating the surgeon with latest advancement in the technology and techniques.

On Inaugurating the Survivorship program looks into follow up, late effects of treatment, family wellbeing and lifestyle changes of cancer patients. It is an initiative where in cancer survivors not only come together, but also involve in motivation, share experiences and support newly diagnosed cancer patients.

The Guest of Honour, Dr PLNG Rao, said, Colorectal cancers have become common in South Asia, due to change in lifestyle and can be found in people across all age group. Exploring and sharing knowledge through events like this will always be helpful in making better surgeons.  

Colorectal cancers constitute 3rd most common cancer and has second highest mortality rate as per WHO data released in 2020. March being the colorectal cancer awareness month was best time to have a CME.

The CME discussed about the latest treatment practices in colorectal cancer care. It was brainstormed by 28 faculty members from 6 cancer centres, practising in various aspects of cancer care ranging from Cancer surgery, Chemotherapy, Radiotherapy, Radiology, Pathology and Palliative care. The Key note address was by Prof Dr Avanish Saklani, Colorectal and robotic surgeon, Tata memorial hospital, Mumbai. The CME was attended by more than 150 practising Doctors from Udupi, Mangalore, Shivamogga, Davanagere, Uttara Kannada and Kodagu districts.

In his overview Dr Naveen Kumar A N said that, around 200 colorectal cancer related surgeries have been performed by the department in the last two years. Currently most of the colorectal cancer surgeries are performed laparoscopically (key hole surgery) which provide faster recovery to the operated patients. The department has also performed hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) surgeries and complex surgeries like Inter-sphincteric resections, exenterations, multi-organ resections, Lung and liver resections or metastatectomy surgeries for colorectal cancers. Dr Sharath Kumar Rao welcomed the gathering and Dr Avinash Shetty proposed vote of thanks.
