Udupi : Nine-day novena prior to the feast of the Nativity of Blessed Mary began today on Monday, August 30 at Milagres Cathedral Kallianpur of Udupi diocese here. The nine-day novena to mark the feast began with a religious note in keeping with centuries’ old tradition of celebrating the birth of Mother Mary which will be celebrated with all grandeur on September 8.
The mass was celebrated at 6.45am which 15 minutes late than usual every year by Very Rev Fr. Valerian Mendonca Rector of the cathedral and Vicar along with Rev Fr. Joy Rolson Andrede Asst. parish priest.
The liturgy of the mass was conducted by children of the parish. At the end of mass, the novena prayers were conducted by the Fr Valerian Mendonca. This year the atmosphere to offer flowers to the Infant Mary changed with vertical side of the Cathedral portico.
Children are like flowers and they have a passion for flowers that are filled with various colors and beautiful like children and so wonderful, while they please our Infant Mother Mary when these kids with love, excitement and devotion come to offer early in the morning despite of slight showers of rain.
It is an opportunity for the young children to gather flowers from the gardens and offer them to Infant Mother Mary during the Nine days of Novena services and showering flowers is a magical moment for each child as well as elders also. Children as well as the faithful happily singing hymn “Moriye Hogalsiyam” and offered beautiful flowers. Devotees of Mother Mary largely attended in the first day of novena mass in the morning eventhough there was moderate rain. Even children along with their parents from Kakkunje, Thonse, Edbettu, Puttur and Uppoor wards were participated during the first day of Novena. As usual, sweets and stationery were distributed to the enthusiastic children at large at the end.
