MANIPAL: Manipal Institute of Communication in association with UNESCO Peace chair celebrates International Day of Peace via two days of talks on the topic of "Culture of Peace and Non Violence in Contemporary Times"

On 20th September 2021, Manipal Institute of Communication inaugurated a series of talks in commemoration of International Peace Day on MS Teams in online mode.
Sartia Jadav, National Program Officer, UNESCO, New Delhi, who was the first speaker of the day spoke on the topic of what the Role of UNESCO has been in establishing a culture of peace and sustainable development for the way forward.

Ambassador Vishnu Prakash, Retired High Commissioner took to the stage next, where he engaged with everyone present with an insightful session on India’s Geopolitical challenges and opportunities. He spoke extensively about the Foreign policies of India with a focus on Indo-China relations and other contemporary world affairs like the situation in Afghanistan. “India’s Foreign Policy is directed towards building relations and reflecting peace”, quoted Ambassador Vishnu Prakash when speaking about what the primary focus of India’s foreign policy is. He also mentioned how China is the main problem for India as they won’t back down from any of their claims and they wish to showcase India as nothing but a soft power in the field of Geopolitics, and hence will not be a capable world leader.
 Professor Sanjoy Hazarika, Director, Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative, New Delhi and Director of Centre of North East studies and Policy Research, Jamia Millia Islamia, He spoke on Conflict Resolution in the North East with a People Centric Approach. He spoke about his life experiences revolving around North East India about conflicts in those regions and their origin. “Concept of alienation is a human act”, he mentioned while talking about the feeling of alienation that the people of North Eastern states of India stuck in conflict zones felt at all times. Professor MD Nalapat, Professor of Geopolitics and UNESCO Peace Chair, Manipal concluded the first day with his remarks by connecting the dots of all the speakers. “Peace is a universal human right”, he said while focusing on why talks like these are immensely important.
On 21st September, the second day began with Professor MD Nalapat giving the opening remarks. The first speaker of the day was Ms Seema Mustafa, Founder Editor, The Citizen. Her topic was robust, based upon “Reflections”, about her experience in the industry in the field of journalism so far. While speaking about conflicts in general and the need for peace, she said “War is an act of fear and insecurity. In contemporary times nobody is fighting to protect their motherland. Gandhi’s principles of Non Violence holds the key to the future. Violence is not a solution, war only brings destruction”. 
The final talk of the series was given by Mr. Hridayesh Joshi, Independent Journalist and writer. He spoke on Conflict reporting and writing based on his own experiences, as he had extensively done conflict reporting in central India especially the Bastar region.He outlined the things one needs to keep in mind while reporting from conflict ridden areas. The closing remarks for the event came from Dr Padma Rani as she summarised all the talks held in the two days. “It is very important for a journalist to assess the story from all sides before writing about it”, she mentioned while talking about her experience as a professor with her defence communication students.
Dr Shubha HS, HOD, Media Studies, Manipal Institute of Communication spoke about the importance of peace and non -violence which have been core values in Indian culture, which makes it important to mark off the International Day of peace with spreading more awareness on this.
