Print Kemmannu, Nov 18, 2012: The historic Thonse Padumane Kambala of Kemmannu was held on Sunday 18 November at the Padumane Family’s fields at Kandige. People cutting across religion, caste and creed attended the festivities and celebrated it as a rural festival.
Unlike previous years, this year’s Kambla was held in day time, which started at around 1 pm and ended before sunset.
Earlier in the day, Padumane family elder Mr. Raghuram Shetty proceeded to the Kandige Temple along with the family members and paid obeisance to the family deity. Later he declared the Kambla open by releasing the first pair of family buffalos to the racing field.
Tonse Padumane Kambala has a history of over a hundred years. It is said that 100 to 200 pairs of buffalos took part in the Kambala in the early 19thcentury. Due to the decline of agriculture in the area, the number has declined and about 30 pairs took part this year.
Earlier on Saturday night, as a custom, ‘Bobbrya Kola’ was held at the ancestral Padumane house. Traditional drum beating by Koragas and them receiving the rice and coconut from the family is a tradition still followed by the family.
Thousands of people from Kemmannu and surrounding areas thronged to the Kambala site, enjoyed the rural sport, and witnessed the rich spirit of tradition associated with the Padumane Kambala.

| There is no need to beat the children to pass the exams instead now they get all kind of counseling and tutions. The human can say please do not beat or hurt me i will run the race if i can run I will do it my own. Have you seen such thing in olympics or any race to win the title people have been beaten I think it is an un civilized way according to child protection parents canot even beat or punish a child physically. I suppose if the buffaloes are pinched in the ass by simulators they will run faster, Hope some research would help! Agree[0]

| Sadanada Pinto, Manipal Udupi have you see how royal the owners take care for their buffaloes have you not beaten your children to win the race or to score higher percentage in EXAMS ???? .....In my younger days for kambala event much i came across much of the owners of buffaloes are from bunts and billawas community it seems for me this is fight between this two community to win the RACE , their spirit is still alive i.e KAMBALA till run in mangalore.
