Major earthquake strikes south-east Iran

Tremors in North India, 40 dead in Iran earthquake (Updated: April 16, 2013 17:19 IST)(NDTV)

New Delhi:(NDTV) Tremors were felt across 6orth India shortly after 4 pm today as an earthquake of magnitude 7.8 struck Iran,  where 40 people were reported dead at 5 pm and many more were feared killed.

The epicentre was reportedly along the Iran-Pakistan border.

"The aftershocks felt were 6.3 and at 4.24pm. No damage as such occurred," said RS Dattatreya of the Meteorological Department in Delhi.

In Delhi and Gurgaon, some posts on Twitter shared photos of evacuated buildings.
Tremors were reported in Jaipur, Ahmedabad and Chandigarh.
The US Geological Survey says the quake was at a depth of 15.2 kilometers (nine miles).

Across the Gulf, high-rise buildings swayed and officials ordered evacuations. Dubai has the world’s tallest tower, the 828-meter (2,717 -foot) Burj Khalifa.

A major earthquake struck a region near the Iran-Pakistan border, less than a week after a quake in Iran killed at least 37 people, the Associated Press reported. The U.S. Geological Survey said the 7.8 quake struck the slightly populated region. There were no immediate reports of injuries, but the quake was felt as far away as New Delhi and Gulf cities of Dubai and Bahrain. The USGS report said Tuesday’s quake was at a depth of 15.2 kilometers (nine miles). New tremors felt across Doha after magnitude 8 earthquake strikes Iran (dohanews.co)update 2.30 pm(Qatar time)


Reports have been coming in from across the city of tremors and shakes after a major earthquake struck nearby Iran this afternoon.

Reuters news agency reports that a magnitude 8 earthquake struck Iran just before 2pm Doha local time. 

As the aftershocks reverberated across the region, residents in Doha - including the Landmark area, Al Sadd, Education City and Katara - say they felt tremors for several seconds. 

A number of towers and buildings across the city are again being evacuated as a safety precaution, but there are no reports out yet of any injuries or damages.

Last week, many residents of Doha were evacuated from homes and office buildings after a magnitude 6.3 earthquake hit southern Iran.

Witnesses have reported feeling the impact of today’s quake in Pakistan, India and the UAE.

Earthquake In Dubai, No Official Details Yet

People in Dubai, UAE have felt an earthquake, the second in two weeks. The UAE’s National Center of Meteorology & Seismology (NCMS) confirmed the quake. Gulf Business offices are being evacuated. More news to follow..

New DelhiDelhi, Chandigarh, Jaipur and Ahmedabad reported major tremors as an earthquake of magnitude 7.8 on the Richter scale struck Iran.

The epicentre was reportedly at the Pakistan-Iran border, tremors were felt across North India, the MET department reported.

At the NDTV studio in South Delhi, studio lights and equipment shook for nearly a minute.

The quake was reportedly felt in Pakistan, Iran, Afghanistan as well.

There were no immediate reports of loss of life or damage to property in the capital.

Earlier News of last earthquake two weeks before

Al Ain: A severe 6.3 magnitude earthquake in southern Iran shocked the Arabian Gulf, jolting UAE coastal cities including Dubai, Sharjah and other emirates on Tuesday afternoon.

The epicentre of the quake is located some 280km in the north of Manama in Bahrain across the sea. It was some 10km deep into the earth and registered as a severe earthquake.

The jolts panicked people in Dubai’s high rise buildings and residents rushed out to open places and parks. No casualties and property damage have yet been reported.

The US Geological Survey confirmed the earthquake’s magnitude as 6.3. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre has reported another aftershock of 5.4 magnitude in the same Iranian territory.

What to do during an earthquake:
  • Don’t panic. Check your surroundings.
  • Protect your head. Keep away from any hanging objects that may fall.
  • When indoors, stay under sturdy furniture like a table and hold on to it until the shaking stops. Stay away from glass windows and doors.
  • If you’re in the kitchen, switch off the stove before taking cover.
  • When outdoors, stay away from electric posts, gas or fuel lines, or anything unstable that could collapse.
