BANGALORE: Cracking the whip, Karnataka government on Monday transferred Bangalore police commissioner Raghavendra Auradkar in the wake of a series of rape cases, including that of a 6-year-old girl student in a public school.

Auradkar has been transferred with immediate effect and posted as additional director general of police of Karnataka State Reserve Police, a government notification said, with the action coming amid continuing protests over the alleged rape of the girl.


The city police chief had come under severe criticism over the handling of the issue and faced public ire with protesters demanding answers for the delay in arresting the culprits involved in the incident which had evoked public outrage.

The incident at Vibgyor High School had happened on July 2 and the first arrest — of a skating instructor from Bihar — was made yesterday, six days after the complaint was lodged with the police.

In recent days, a 22-year old woman was allegedly raped when she was with her friend in a car after they were forcibly driven away by four men, one of whom committed the crime. A 16-year old nun was also allegedly raped at a seminary.

Auradkar shifted, Reddi is new Bangalore police chief

BANGALORE: M N Reddi was on Monday appointed police commissioner of Bangalore in place of Raghavendra Auradkar, who has been made ADGP of the KSRP. The change of guard seems to be prompted by the wave of protests by Bangaloreans against sexual attacks.

 Reddi said the safety of women and children will top his agenda. He will use basic policing skills to solve cases. On the sexual assault on a six-year-old in an east Bangalore school, he said: "We will book a case against the school management and take stern action against them."

 Additional commissioner (law & order) Kamal Pant was replaced by Alok Kumar, IG-grievance cell. Pant replaces Alok Kumar, who returns to a post he had held in March 2013.

 Auradkar said he had not expected the transfer. "I received the orders around 6pm. We are government servants and are transferred through the career to different posts. I thank all colleagues, from the constable to the additional commissioner, for joining hands with me."

No closure yet in Whitefield school rape case

 A case in point: A nine t year-old girl is still battling r the trauma of sexual assault c committed by an electrician in her upscale school campus in Whitefield on August 1, 2012. The management’s alleged apathy also forced the girl’s parents to get her admitted to another school.

 The case is still meandering in the civil judge and first class judicial magistrate (JMFC) court in Hoskote.

 "The accused, Madhu alias R Madhusudan, 24, an elec trician in the school, was arrested two days after the incident. He was enlarged on bail and is now working on the outskirts of the city. The girl is pursuing her studies in some other school," said Abdul Ahad, additional superintendent of police, Bangalore rural.

 The school principal denied that such an incident had happened in her institution. But the documents in possession of TOI reveal that she, three other teachers and a security guard of the school were the witnesses in the case.

 According to the complaint registered at Tirumala Shettyhalli police station on August 1, 2012, the girl returned home from school and complained of abdominal pain. The child told her mother that she was assaulted by Madhu. "The mother first rushed to the school and then to the police station. Both the survivor and the assailant underwent medical examination on August 1, 2012, itself. The case is still under trial," said another police officer.

 Police invoked Section 376 (rape) of IPC against Madhu, a native of Tegalamari village in Kadri taluk of Anantpur district of Andhra Pradesh. "Madhu was residing on the premises of the school. He befriended the girl and took her to his room where he allegedly raped her. We are keeping a tab on the accused to prevent him from committing such offences again. At present, the court is examining the witnesses in the case," the officer said.

 The state government’s promise that special courts will attend to child sexual assault cases notwithstanding, the regular court is hearing this case.
