New Delhi:  From Delhi’s imposing Red Fort early on Friday morning, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made an extempore first Independence Day speech, telling the world, "Come, make in India. Sell anywhere, but manufacture here.  We have the skill and the talent." (Come, Make In India. Manufacture Here: PM’s Call to Investors)

The bullet proof glass that previous Prime Ministers have stood behind was conspicuous by its absence as the Prime Minister reached out - not just to investors, but also to political rivals. "We want to move forward not on the basis of majority but on consensus," Mr Modi said. (PM Modi’s Top Quotes)

Wearing a cream short-sleeved kurta and a red safa or turban, Mr Modi reiterated the commitments that powered his campaign for the national election this year - a focus on creating jobs and attracting investment.  He once again stressed on good governance and development as the core strength of democracy and said his priority was "people private partnership" where the young would create many jobs. In another break with tradition, more than 10,000 members of the public were present at the Red Fort; the occasion is usually reserved for VIPs. (PM Modi’s Independence Day Speech: Who Said What)

The Prime Minister began by stating that he is "not the pradhan mantri (prime minister) but the pradhan sevak (prime servant)," promising that his government, now three months old, will serve, not rule. (For PM’s Speech, No Bullet-Proof Glass is a Break from Tradition)

In a speech high on emotional content, he also said that it was a tribute to Indian democracy that "a person from a poor family, an ordinary family is today addressing the nation from the Red Fort." He described himself as an "outsider in Delhi, not liked by the city’s elite."  (I Am an Outsider to Delhi, Stresses PM Modi in His Speech)

The Prime Minister talked less about policy or schemes, and more about the need for urgent social fixes. He talked about communal and caste violence as an obstacle to growth. And about the shame of rape and female feoticide. "Don’t kill daughters in the womb. It is a blot on 21st century India," he said. (PM Modi’s Speech: Read the Highlights)

Come, Make In India: PM Modi’s Invite To the World

"Let us take a pledge to defeat poverty," the prime minister said, also announcing a ’ people wealth scheme’  (jan dhan yojna) to ensure all Indians can have a bank account, while blaming the high level of suicides among farmers on their inability to pay back money-lenders. My dear Indians, my greetings to all of you on this day.
I am here not as pradhan mantri (Prime Minister) but as pradhan sevak (prime servant in service of country). (PM Modi’s Independence Day Speech: Who Said What)

•We want to forge ahead with digital India. We want to give good governance through E-governance.

•E-Governance is easy governance, effective governance.

•We have to move towards ’Digital India’.
•Our mission is skill development. There can be no development with a jaded system.

•The world has changed.  India cannot sit isolated in one corner and determine its future.

•I don’t know whether people will appreciate me talking about dirt & toilets from Red Fort but I come from a poor family.

•There are many schemes named after the PM and many leaders. Today I announce a scheme in the name of Parliament. A scheme for villages. Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana.

•By 2016, MPs should have at least made one village an ideal village.

•If we want to develop India, we need to develop villages.
•By the end of five years, each MP should have converted at least five villages into ideal villages.
•We will keep the blue-print of this scheme in front the MPs on October 11.

•There has been much speculation about the Planning Commission.

•The Planning Commission was made according to the country’s needs back then.

•The country has changed, its needs have changed. Times have changed from the time the Planning Commission was created. (Bye-Bye, Planning Commission. PM Says It’s Over.)

•If we want to take the country forward, the states have to be taken forward.

•Sometimes renovating an old house takes a lot of money and we are still not satisfied, hence it is better to build a new one.

•With the object of building a partnership between the Centre and the state, with the object of strengthening our country, we will soon create a new institution.
•We fought for freedom together. We had no government, no weapons to help us. We defeated such a big empire without any government, without any arms.

•Leaders of SAARC nations came to the swearing-in ceremony. It was a good sign.

Separate Toilets for the girl child in all schools impressed me the most.

Every household in India should have a toilet and Gujarat tops with 57.4 % homes having toilets.

This man leads from the front has the guts to speak about Toilets even on INDEPENDENCE DAY ...
