Puttur : The Post Graduate Department of Physics, St Philomena College, Puttur, has organized a workshop on Essentials of Computer Applications, on 10th October 2014.

The main focus of this workshop was to learn some basic skills in computer usage and to learn and operate some important software in curricular and academic activities. Also it had the concern of developing knowledge and ability among the students to utilize computers and related technology efficiently, with a range of skills covering levels from elementary usage to programming and problem solving level.

The Workshop was started with the prayer, followed by the keynote address from Rev. Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro, Chairperson, Centre for PG Studies, St.PhilomenaCollege Puttur. Dr E. Deepak D’Silva, Coordinator of MSc Physics, faculty members of PG Physics and PG Computer science Department and students were present on the occasion.

Rev. Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro, in his address wished the gathering to take good out of the workshop and get benefited; this event may give an idea for using computer skills in the academic studies and thereby enhancing the learning process. He also congratulated the Department of Physics for organizing the workshop and wished all the students to take active part in the same.

During First session of the workshop, Mr Praveen N Assistant Professor, PG Department of Computer science, St.Philomena College Puttur, addressed the participants on the topic “Introduction to Free and Open Source and Software (FOSS)” and gave a presentation on LaTeX software and its various packages.

Mr Sooryanarayana Bhat B, Assistant professor PG department of computer science, St.Philomena College Puttur, spoke on the topic “Computer Applications” during the second session. Which covered the topics like Microsoft word, excel, PowerPoint presentation and usage of origin software.

During the third session students got the opportunity to have hands on experience to install and practice the LaTeX software.And they were also provided with the knowledge of effective internet usage.

At the end of the third session Prof. Leo Noronha, Principal of the college addressed the gathering and congratulated everyone for making the workshop successful. And he also urged the participants to give some essential contribution to the nation in the field of Information Technology. Apart from being the MC Ms Soumya of 2nd MSc also welcomed the gathering. Mr Koushith of first MSc proposed the vote of thanks.
