Book on Biomedical Spectroscopy released at Manipal University

Manipal, Nov 22, 2014: It is an incredible achievement of bringing out 32 scholarly publications within 36 months by Manipal University Press (MUP), said Dr H S Ballal, the Pro Chancellor of Manipal University. He was speaking after releasing the book titled Biomedical Spectroscopy published by MUP here at Manipal University on Saturday.

The vision of establishing our own University Press was to give a platform for the faculty members and the researchers of the University to publish their research outcomes in volumes for the benefits of the academia. Today, we feel proud that Manipal University institutes such as Department of Atomic and Molecular Physics are making good use of such opportunities and contributing to the entire country in such emerging areas like Biomedical Spectroscopy. This book, which is intended to promote advanced technology, would help the healthcare professionals to detect the deadly diseases like cancer and cure them in early stages. As we are aiming to be one of the top 200 institutes of the world and research and publications in these areas are convincing our dream, he added. He also lauded the efforts of Dr H Vinod Bhat, the Pro Vice Chancellor of the varsity and Dr Neeta Inamdar, Head – Department of European Studies, for their successful leadership in building MUP.

Delivering the presidential address, Dr H Vinod Bhat, the Pro Vice Chancellor of the University said scholarly research articles in globally reputed journals such as Nature and research projects in niche areas such as Biomedical Spectroscopy and Archaeophotonics are the legacy of the Department of Atomic and Molecular Physics, which was established by Dr Vasudevan Bhaskaran Kartha.

Dr Kartha, the pioneer of the spectroscopy in the country, is well remembered by the University and the global scientist community for his achievements and here we are releasing the book, which is one of the outcomes of the research, which was initiated by him. With a successful journey of three years, MUP is now venturing into publishing of research journals in different disciplines jointly with the Directorate of Research of MU, after publishing many books, reference works and monographs. It is proud to express that MUP, not only publishes books and journals, but also caters to the needs of the students and researchers of the region by extending its support with editorial and design and publishing services, concluded Dr Bhat.

Dr Santosh Chidangil, the Head of the Department of Atomic and Molecular Physics and the co-author of the book stated, it is indeed pleasure to hold the fruit of the research, which was conducted for years. It is privilege to say that the technology that Manipal University possess in this area is one of its kinds in entire south India. This book, which has cited more than 1000 of references speaks about amount of the research, was conducted. This book would also serve as a starting point for the students and at the same time would be very helpful tool for those who are conducting research in the area, he added.
