Udupi Nov 25: Home Minister K J George formally inaugurated the Coastal Security Police administrative building and Police Residential quarters at Malpe Port premises on Tuesday November 25. He also symbolically inaugurated 12 police quarters at Shivalli by handing over their keys to police personnel.
The programme began with an invocation by students of Government Hr Primary School Malpe. Amarkumar Pande additional director of Police Internal Security department Bangalore welcomed the gathering.

In his inaugural message Home Minister K J George said that the coastal police security is upgraded following the increasing terror activities all through the East coast. There are nine coastal security police stations in the coastal stretch in the state. The Minister said that law and order is under control in the state. However, the opposition is levelling allegations.

The recruitment process in the police force is taken up on priority in order to overcome the shortage of police personnel. As many as 8,500 police personnel are recruited in the process of strengthening the police force in state. Around 22,000 posts are lying vacant in the police department. The recruitment is taken up as a yearly programme. In order to fill the gap, as the police personnel need 18 months of training to take up assignment, the chief minister has directed to recruit 7,000 home guards.

The State government will construct 11,500 new police quarters in Karnataka of which 200 units will be in Udupi district. The minister emphasised peoples cooperation in maintaining law and order and curbing crime, particularly sexual violence against women and children. Without active cooperation from the people, it is impossible for the police alone to curb crime and maintain law and order. As many as 10 fast track-courts to exclusively try crimes against women would come up across the state. The earlier  government had mooted the idea of setting up 10 fast track courts exclusively to try atrocities against women. The present government took the proposal forward by writing to the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court. The move to set up fast-track courts is for speedy disposal of cases and will instill confidence among women he said.

Udupi district minister in-charge Vinay Kumar Sorake inaugurated the new quarters. Udupi MLA Pramod Madhwaraj presided over the function. Udupi MLA Pramod Madhwaraj in his address appealed to the home minister to provide fire engines to the Malpe police station and new police jeeps. He said the police are still using 1983 model jeeps and there is an urgent requirement of brand new vehicles. George promised to fulfil these demands within 15 days and said that already permission had been given to provide 400 new vehicles to police forces across the state.
