Udupi Nov 27: (mangalorean.com) Hundreds of people gathered in front of the Shri Laxmi Venkatarama Temple here on Thursday November 27 to witness the flagging off of the Sports Chariot to create awareness about the state-level high school boys and girls flood-lit sports meet which will be held on November 29 to December 1 at the Mahathma Gandhi District Stadium Ajjarkad here. K V Shenoy administrative trustee of the temple flagged off the chariot by lighting the lamp. Oscar Fernandes Member of Rajya Sabha lit the Krida Jyothi (Sports Torch) and wished all success for the Sports meet.

The Sports Chariot passing from the temple entered the Mother of Sorrows Church, Fr Clement Mascrenhas welcome the Chariot. Later the Chariot passed through Udupi City and entered the Jamia Mosque where Moulana Rasheed Ahammed Nadwi welcomed the chariot and wished all success for the sports meet.

 The sports chariot will pass through all the three taluks in the district. The Chariot will pass through Rajathadri Manipal, Brhamavar, Kota, Koteshwar, Kundapur, Tallur, Navunda, Byndoor, Kollur, Halady, Hebri, Perdoor, Hiriyadka, Bailoor, Karkala, Belman, Padubidri, Hejamadi, Kaup, Katapadi and return to the Rajangana on Saturday November 29. Around 2,500 boys and girls, team managers from 34 districts and two sports schools from the State will participate in the three-day sports meet.

 Rs 35 lakh will be utilised for hosting the meet. Preparations have been made for the success of the meet. Those who win will take part in the national level sports meet scheduled to be held at Ranchi in December. Udupi MLA Pramod Madhwraj, CMC President Yuvaraj, vice president Amritha Krishnamoorty, ZP member Ida Gibba D’Souza, former MLA U R Sabhapathi, Sathish Ameen Padukere, Ramesh Kanchan, Amrith Shenoy, Dinesh Putran, Prakash Andrade and others were present.

The Department of Public Instruction will organise a State-level High School Boys and Girls tournament at the Mahatma Gandhi District stadium here from November 29 to December 1.

 Addressing presspersons here recently, Vinay Kumar Sorake, Urban Development Minister, said that 2,500 girls and boys from 34 educational districts and two sports residential schools from the State will take part. As many as 33 competitions will be held and 99 medals would be handed out.

The winner and the runner-up will chosen for the the National-level Sports Meet to be held in Ranchi in December. To create awareness about the event throughout Udupi district, a sports chariot (Kreeda Rath) will be flagged off from the Venkataramana temple here on November 27. The chariot will pass through Manipal, Brahmavar, Kota, Koteshwar, Kundapur, Tallur, Navunda and Byndoor on Thursday.
