Mangaluru, Jun 17: ‘Konkani Jagrati Abhiyan’ by Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy conducted in 267 schools and colleges across Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Karwar districts, to create awareness and encourage students to take up Konkani language in the academics, concluded with a valedictory programme at St Aloysius High School on Friday June 17.

Speaking on the occasion president of Konkani Sahitya Academy, Roy Castelino said, “Today is an auspicious day for all Konkani lovers, as we have achieved a milestone of reaching 267 schools and colleges across three districts. This was only possible by the joint efforts of all the members who have given their time for the cause. There are 22 national languages and Konkani is one among them. We Konkani speaking people do not value the things that we have instead try to relocate them when they are lost.”

“Konkani speaking people have given great contributions to the nation in every field. It is the need of the hour to protect our language. We all are Indians, Kannadigas and Konkanis. Let’s be proud of it.”

Rector of St Aloysius College Institutions, Fr Dionysius Vas said, “I pray that God blesses this drive which is meant to create awareness about Konkani. St Aloysius Institutions has always supported Konkani learning. We can save our culture by our language. Konkani is our identity and we need to protect this.”

Headmaster of St Aloysius High School, Fr Edward Rodrigues said, “It’s unfortunate that a drive had to be conducted to encourage Konkani learning. I urge Konkani students to join Konkani club to learn the language.”

Speaking on the occasion, Mangaluru south MLA J R Lobo said, “Our children go to English medium schools which is good but we should not forget our mother tongue. Language creates brotherhood among people. By taking Konkani language in the academics, it will also increase the overall marks. There is provision to write all government exams in Konkani.”

He also expressed the need to protect Konkani language for the next generation.

All the members who were part of the drive were honoured on the occasion.
