Its Salsa Time

August 3, 2014, Monday : Mumbai : Kaytee Namgyal, the renowned Salsa expert from Italy is here in Mumbai (a world synonymous to stress) for a 2-week period. Salsa-India, the biggest Salsa school in India, has decided to organise an eight-day dance work shop for Salsa which will be undertaken by Namgyal himself. The workshop, to be called K-Style Bootcamp, will run from 16th -24 August with three different variants in its offering namely Bachata Bonanza, Intensive Kizomba Crash Course and Salsa Lovers Boot Camp. 20% discount for group bookings.

The best way to gauge a nation’s progress is through its television. And when one witnesses TV in India, quite evidently does it reveal that dance in this country is no more just an ’art form’. Not to forget, it is also stepping outside its traditional comfort zone to taste the moves of the outside world.

Now amongst those many dance forms which are clearly making in-roads, Salsa has surely taken up the center stage. The emergence of dance reality shows such as Dance India Dance and Jhalak Dikhla Jaa which embrace Salsa as a major dance form only stand as testimonials to the fact that India is ready to make Salsa a new dance profession. Frankly, salsa as a dance form is one of the most sought after vocations in dance, given the kind of spring Bollywood has given to its feet. Remember the moves from Zindagi Naa Milegi Dobara, Honeymoon Travels and Kal Ho Naa ho?!

Consequently, in a bid to tap into this growing phenomenon, Kaytee Namgyal, the renowned Salsa expert from Italy, is visiting Mumbai for a 2-week period to promote the dance form in India. He is organising an eight-day work shop, along with Salsa-India, the biggest Salsa school in India. Namgyal has taught and performed at several Salsa Festivals and countries across the  world including  Germany, China, USA, Dubai, Lebanon, Greece, Australia, Prague, France, Belgium, Turkey, Portugal, Kenya, Qatar, Lithuania, Egypt, Romania, Hong Kong, Kuwait, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. Kaytee was also a Judge at the China Open Salsa Championship and the Asian Salsa Championship.He is also the Founder / Director of "Salsa India - The Home of Salsa in India" and "K-School of Performing Arts". Both companies which are based in India.

Kaytee is also the founder of the K-Style in Salsa which focuses on musicality, body movement and dancing through one’s body, mind and soul. And therefore, the workshop, with an intent to propagate this style, will be called K-Style Bootcamp. It will run from 16th -24 August with three different variants in its offering namely Bachata Bonanza, Intensive Kizomba Crash Course and Salsa Lovers Boot Camp. K-Style Bootcamp will be organised in Mumbai in Organised Chaos, Parmeshwar Bhawan, Next to B:Blunt, 14th Road Khar, Opposite Lane of Costa Coffee and will offer a 30% discount for group bookings (3 and above). The fee ranges from rs 800 for 8 hours (Intensive Kizomba) to Rs 1000 for 2 hours (Salsa Lovers Boot Camp). The workshop is also open to walk-in joinees at an approximate rate of Rs 800 per person per class.

For the record, Salsa is a popular form of social dance that originated in New York with strong influences from Latin America, particularly Cuba and Puerto Rico. The movements of salsa have its origins in Cuban Son, Cha cha cha, Mambo and other dance forms, and the dance, along with the salsa music, originated in the mid-1970s in New York.

Salsa India was established in April 2001, by ‘Salsa guru’ Kaytee Namgyal and is today the biggest Salsa school in India, with several studios currently running in Delhi, Mumbai, Pune and Kolkata.
