Six months after the Panchayat elections, Kemmannu looks a bit different as far as cleanliness is concerned. Dumping garbage and waste near Kemmannu Bridge was a big issue, highlighted by Kemmannu.com, which drew critical comments about the functioning of Kemmannu Panchayat.

However, with the formation of elected body, headed by Mrs. Jyothi Lewis, immediately got into action and persuaded the culprits who were dumping the garbage to mend their ways. The space near the bridge looks like a different place now with lush green grass. One finds goats often feasting on the tender grass.

Roadside vegetation and shrubs were another problem faced by the citizens. For the entire rainy season, both sides of the road was full with  a kind of Darbe (Elephant grass?) grass, which grow to about 8 feet tall and bends towards the roads. It is a big nuisance for pedestrians while walking on the sideways. Yours truly raised the issue in the July months meeting of Kallianpur Panchayat. Panchayat authorities put the onus on PWD saying they PWD department is responsible for the up keeping of foot paths. On insistence, the PDO (Panchayat Development Officer) wrote a letter to PWD and followed the matter for the next three months. Finally PWD relented and started cleaning the roadside vegetation, which is nearing completion. As seen in the snaps, the road looks beautiful, allowing the walking people to more freely.

However, this is just a battle won by the Panchayat members. A war is yet to be won. There are reports of dumping the garbage in the Keppa Thood at Kambla Thotta. This problem could only be solved through educating and by creating awareness among the concerned people, who dup the waste. Again the roadside vegetation is a perennial problem to be tackled every year.

A special thanks to Mrs. Jyothi Lewis, President of Kemmannu Panchayat, All Members, Mr. Srikanta Moothy, PDO of Kallianpur Panchayat, Mrs. Sunitha S Poojary, President of Kallianpur Panchayat and all those people like Richard Crasta, Benedict P Dsouza, Braan Dsouza and others who fought for the cause, which is showing results now. Let us all join hands to make our birth place environmentally friends and more beautiful.

Just as the harvesting machines, grass cutting Lawn Movers can be of help, provided the sidewalks are well flat and free of large stones or pot holes. If each property owner along the roadside cleans his/her pavement/sidewalk, and plants wild flower plants, the entire area will look like Garden of Eden. More flowers for Monthi Festh and for daily pooja in temples or churches. If the grass is cut once a month the Elephant grass will not grow eight feet. The collected grass can be sold to cow or goat owners or offered to coconut trees as manure. About sixty years ago, I used to trim (using a sickle) the grass along the paddy field bunds (There were no roads) not just for my own cow but I used sell to a neighbour Brahmin for half an Anna for one basket. Those were the Good Old Days,..... I do admire the efforts of the Kemmannu Panchayat board members.....
