Kemmannu Panchayat gets decaying ’Keppa Thodu Canal’ cleaned

Kemmannu, April 07: ’Keppa Thodu Canal’ is one of the major canals of Thonse Panchayat. It’s length is over 3 kilometres, which starts from Thottam and joins River Swarna near Kambla thotta. The canal is useful to carry excess rain water to the sea. A mini dam is constructed near where the canal joins the river. Every year the dam is shut and in good old day the canal water was used for agriculture by farmers who have fields both sides of the canal.

The Waste Collection During the Cleaning.

The advent of plastic has changed the above equations drastically as people started dumping their plastic wastes apart from domestic waste to the canal. The Keppa Thodu bridge became the focal point as motorists carried all kinds of waste and dumped it down from the bridge.

The result was catastrophic as once the clean canal filled with waste and started decaying. As settlements rose, residents too contributed to the problem by throwing their waste to the canal. Unbearable filthy stench and mosquito menace make the life miserable for residents who live near the canal. Worms also started breeding compounding the situation.

Residents raised the issue in several Panchayat and Gramsabha meeting. The problem was so complicated as who will get down and clean this filth. However, the newly elected Panchayat Members got together and solved the problem by hiring 5 workers from Karkal and cleaned about 200 meters of the canal where it joins the river, where most of the waste was accumulated.

However, this looks like a temporary solution unless people will co-operate and manage their domestic waste themselves and local body make some efforts to collect and dispose the waste.

For the time being residents have heaved a sigh of relief and thanked the Panchayat officials and Members for a job well done.

In total over 4 trucks load of garbage was fished out, which will be shifted to municipality dumping yard and disposed off.

ಕೆಪ್ಪತೋಡಿಗೆ ಸೇತುವೆಯಿಂದ  ಕಸ ತ್ಯಾಜ್ಯ ಎಸೆದ ಕೆಲವರ ಕೃತ್ಯದಿಂದ ಉಪ್ಪು ನೀರು ತಡೆಗೆ ಹಾಕಲಾಗಿದ್ದ ಕಟ್ಟದ ಬಳಿಯಿಂದ ಸೇತುವೆಯವರೆಗೆ ಕಸ ತ್ಯಾಜ್ಯ ತುಂಬಿಕೊಂಡು ಕೊಳೆತು ನೀರು ಹಾಳಾಗಿ ದುರ್ನಾತ ಬೀರುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಸ್ಥಳಿಯ ನಿವಾಸಿಗಳು ಇದರಿಂದ ತುಂಬಾ ತೊಂದರೆ ಅನುಭವಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು‌. ಇದು ಹೀಗೇ ಮುಂದುವರೆದಲ್ಲಿ ತೋಡಿನ ನೀರು ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಹಾಳಾಗಿ ಗ್ರಾಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾಂಕ್ರಾಮಿಕ ರೋಗ ಹರಡುವ ಸಾಧ್ಯತೆಗಳಿದ್ದವು. ಈ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಸ್ಥಳೀಯರು ಗ್ರಾ ಪಂ ನ ಗಮನಕ್ಕೆ ತಂದು ಸಮಸ್ಯೆ ನಿವಾರಿಸಬೇಕೆಂದು ಕೋರಿದ್ದರು.

ಈ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಗ್ರಾ ಪಂ ನ ಆಡಳಿತ ಮಂಡಳಿಯವರು ಪರಿಶೀಲಿಸಿ ಆ ಕಸ ತ್ಯಾಜ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ತೆಗೆಸಲು ನಿರ್ಧರಿಸಿ ಹಲವರನ್ನು ಸಂಪರ್ಕಿಸಲಾಯಿತು‌. ಆದರೇ ಇದನ್ನು ನೋಡಿ ಹೋದವರು ಮತ್ತೆ ಬರುವುದಾಗಿ ಹೋದ ಬಳಿಕ ಪತ್ತೆಯಿಲ್ಲವಾಗಿತ್ತು.  ಗ್ರಾ ಪಂ ಗೆ ಇದೊಂದು ದೊಡ್ಡ ತಲೆನೋವಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಸ್ಥಳಿಯರ ಸಹನೆಯೂ ಮೀರುವಂತಹ ಮಾತುಗಳು ಕೇಳಿಸಿದ್ದವು!  ಪರಿಹಾರ ಮಾಡುವುದು ಹೇಗೆ ಎಂಬುದೇ ತಿಳಿಯದ ಪರಿಸ್ಥಿತಿ!!

ಕಟ್ಟದ ಹಲಗೆ ತೆಗೆಯಲು ಅನುಮತಿ ಕೊಡಿ, ನಾವು ಸ್ವಚ್ಛ ಮಾಡುತ್ತೇವೆ ಎಂದೂ ಕೆಲವರು ಹೇಳಿದ್ದರು. ಸಮಸ್ಯೆ ನಿವಾರಿಸದಿದ್ದಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರತಿಭಟನೆ ಮಾಡಲು ಯೋಚಿಸುತ್ತೇವೆ ಎಂಬ ಲಿಖಿತ ಮನವಿಯೂ ಪಕ್ಷವೊಂದರ ಘಟಕದಿಂದ ಬಂದಿತ್ತು.

ಹೇಗಾದರೂ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆ ನಿವಾರಿಸಲೇ ಬೇಕು ಎಂದು ಹಟ ತೊಟ್ಟ ಆಡಳಿತ ಮಂಡಳಿ ತುರ್ತು ಸಭೆ ನಡೆಸಿ ಈ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಚರ್ಚಿಸಿತು. ಕೊನೆಯದಾಗಿ ಇಂತಹ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡುವ ತಂಡವೊಂದಿದೆ, ಅವರನ್ನು ಸಂಪರ್ಕಿಸಿದರೇ ಆಗಬಹುದು ಎಂದು ಸದಸ್ಯರಾದ  ಪುರಂದರ ಟಿ.ಕುಂದರ್ ಆ ಸಭೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಳಿದರು. ಅದನ್ನು ಎಲ್ಲರೂ ಒಪ್ಪಿಕೊಂಡು ಆ ಕೆಲಸಗಾರರ ತಂಡದ ಮುಖಂಡ ಸೋಮನಾಥರವನ್ನು ಕರೆಸಿ ತೋರಿಸಲಾಯಿತು. ಅವರು ಒಪ್ಪಿಕೊಂಡು ಮಾಡುವುದಾಗಿ ಮಾತು ಕೊಟ್ಟಂತೆ ನಿನ್ನೆ ಮತ್ತು ಇಂದು ಆ ತಂಡದ ಐದು ಯುವಕರು ತೋಡಿಗಿಳಿದರು. ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಮನುಷ್ಯರು ಮಾಡಲು ಹೇಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಟ್ಟರು. ಅವರಿಗೆ ಪಂಚಾಯತ್ ಮತ್ತು ಗ್ರಾಮಸ್ಥರ ಪರವಾಗಿ ಧನ್ಯವಾದಗಳನ್ನು ಹೇಳಲೇ ಬೇಕಿದೆ. ಎಷ್ಟು ಕೃತಜ್ಞತೆ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಿದರೂ ಸಾಧ್ಯವಾಗದು.

ನಿನ್ನೆ ಮತ್ತು ಇವತ್ತಿನ ಇಡೀ ದಿನ ಸದಸ್ಯರುಗಳಾದ ಅರುಣ್ ಫೆರ್ನಾಂಡೀಸ್, ಯಶೋದಾ, ವತ್ಸಲಾ ವಿನೋದ್ ಈ ಕಾರ್ಯದ ಉಸ್ತುವಾರಿ ನಡೆಸಿದ್ದರು. ಅದೇ ರೀತಿ ನಿಕಟ ಪೂರ್ವ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರಾದ ಫೌಜಿಯಾ ಮತ್ತವರ ಪತಿ ಮಾಜಿ ಉಪಾಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರಾದ  ಉಸ್ತಾದ್ ಸಾದಿಕ್, ಸದಸ್ಯರಾದ ಕುಸುಮ ಅವರೂ ಇದ್ದರು.
ಸದಸ್ಯರಾದ ಪುರಂದರ ಕುಂದರ್ ಮತ್ತು ಉಪಾಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರಾದ ನಿತ್ಯಾನಂದ ಕೆಮ್ಮಣ್ಣು ಅವರು ಈ ಕಾರ್ಯಾರಂಭದ ಚಾಲನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಜೊತೆಗಿದ್ದರು. ಪಂಚಾಯತ್ ಸಿಬ್ಬಂದಿಗಳಾದ ಪ್ರಕಾಶ ಮತ್ತು ಸಂತೋಷ್ ಕೆಲಸಗಾರರಿಗೆ ಊಟ ಉಪಹಾರ ಒದಗಿಸಲು ಸಹಕರಿಸಿದ್ದರು.
ಗ್ರಾ ಪಂ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರಾದ ಲತಾ ಮತ್ತು ಪಂಚಾಯತ್ ಅಭಿವೃದ್ದಿ ಅಧಿಕಾರಿ ಕಮಲಾ ಅವರ ಉಸ್ತುವಾರಿಯೊಂದಿಗೆ ನಡೆದ ಈ ಕಾರ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಲವು ಗ್ರಾಮಸ್ಥರೂ ಸಹಕರಿಸಿದ್ದರು.
ಎಲ್ಲರ ಸಹಕಾರದಿಂದ ಈ ತೋಡನ್ನು 90% ಸ್ವಚ್ಛಗೊಳಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಗುತ್ತಿಗೆದಾರ ರಾಘವೇಂದ್ರ ಶೆಟ್ಟಿ ಕರ್ಜೆಯವರ ಸಹಕಾರವೂ ಇದೆ.

ಎಲ್ಲರ ಸಹಕಾರಕ್ಕೆ ಧನ್ಯವಾದಗಳು ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಮುಂದೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕಸ ತ್ಯಾಜ್ಯ ಹಾಕದಂತೆ ನೋಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಜವಬ್ದಾರಿಯೂ ಇದೆ ಎನ್ನುವುದನ್ನು ನೆನಪಿಸುತ್ತಾ ಸಹಕರಿಸಿದ ಸರ್ವರಿಗೂ ಮಗದೊಮ್ಮೆ ಕೃತಜ್ಞತೆಗಳು
