Udupi/Kodi Bengre(Kemmannu), May 28, 2012: The Gold coast of Australia is well known as the surfer’s paradise. The adventure sport is unknown in our coastal belt. However Tushar Pathian has made a beginning by starting a surf club “The shaka Surf Club” at Bengre near Kemmannu. The architecture graduate from MIT, Manipal has started the club last year in Manipal and he is getting good response, Especially from students of Manipal.

“I fell in love with this sport when first set my foots on the Surf board and sold some of my belongings to buy a second hand Surfing board which is very expensive” says Pathian. He visits the shop he has set up in Bengre(Near Kemmannu) on holidays and weekends and teaches the basics for the beginners. Experienced surfers can take the boards and surf on their own.

For the beginners he starts the classes by drawing the board on the sand beach and teaches them the tricks of the Trade. For an onlooker it looks like Kabaddi practice. “Confidence and balance is essential” Says Pathian. “Of course you need to learn swimming” he says.

Abel D’souza, a young beginner who is an expert skater, who took his first lessons, says “It is like skating, I am confident that I will conquer the swells within 4 sessions”.

The adventurous and a bit expensive sport is slowly getting  recognition from the locals. Many locals have started learning the sport. “Certainly I will master this sport” says Braan Dsouza who had his first lessons recently.

Those interested may contact Tushar Pathian on his Mobile Number: 9986742710 or on his fb Page : http://www.facebook.com/TheShakaSurfClub

About Shaka Surf Club

The Shaka Surf Club is the premier surf school serving the western coast of Karnataka, India. We provide beginner level surf lessons run by experienced surfers. At TSSC, it’s all about SURFING, SAFETY and FUN!
Mission

The Shaka Surf Club aims to promote the sport and culture of surfing in India. We wish to get more people in the water, by educating them about the ocean and dispelling fears of the ocean that are deep rooted in the Indian society. We try to combine humanitarian work with surfing and provide under-privileged youth with an opportunity to experience the joy of surfing.
Description
The Shaka Surf Club is all about freedom in the waves, good vibes, not taking things too seriously and learning to just go with the flow. We started The Shaka Surf Club to share our stoke of surfing with all the good folk who cross our wave-filled path.

We provide beginner level surf lessons, run by experienced surfers and welcome people, of all ages, hailing from all places, to come surf with us in India :)

General Information
• We DO NOT give lessons to NON-SWIMMERS!
• Each surf session lasts for 3 hours or till you get tired, whichever comes first!
• All surf instructors are certified in First Aid and CPR, by the American Red Cross Society.

The Shaka Surf Club is the first surf school to be supported by Quiksilver in India!
The Shaka Surf Club is a Surfing Federation of India (SFI) accredited surf school!
Shaka surf instructor Ishita Malaviya, is the first female surfer in India!

The Shaka Surf Club is extremely happy to announce that we are now partnering with an organisation called Project Swim International, in an effort to educate local communities in water safety, and prevent the number of drowning deaths in India.

We recently had a group of PSI volunteers – American Red Cross Lifeguards from Tuscon, Arizona - who visited us in Manipal, and trained us in Surf Rescue, First Aid and CPR. During their visit, we also conducted a Water Safety Education Program in a local college to a group of nearly 40 students, which was a big success!

We even got the opportunity to record a show about water safety on Manipal Radio 90.4 FM- a community radio station that broadcasts programs to smaller towns within 30 kms distance from Manipal!

[We had a really good swell recently! Usually when the waves get this good, no one ever feels like taking any pictures, cos everyone would rather be in the water Surfing! But, this time we were lucky enough to have our good friends Abhirup, Lijo and Ashwin come down to the beach and get some EPIC shots of us surfing!! Check em out!! - TUSHAR AND ISHITA]

Dear all. We tend to feed the fish that is organic and we feed em because According to Newton’s third law, for every action force there is an equal (in size) and opposite (in direction) reaction force. that is catching more fish in the nets so we lay it on beach.

@Shalini, Karnataka government has built free / subsidized toilets for our fishermen but these jokers still spoil our beaches. The only solution is telescopic guns with rubber bullets. I am enthralled with the quality of responses and inputs, I am sure together we can make our Karnataka a better place. To be honest I was fed up with these “thank you uncle”, “happy birthday aunty” or “nice pictures shabby” responses.

I guess there is super thrill in surfing. I ADMIRE THE PEOPLE WHO TAKE RISK IN BRINGING THIS SPORT to Red-Mud-Land. I used to enjoy Kutti-Donno. However, there is no greater thrill, than in catching the knocked down mango by using bondi or smmall stone, of my neighbour, before it touched the ground. I did succeed just three times, after about 500 attempts.

Does anyone know what fish eat? Whats wrong in feeding fish? A man had to be hospitalized because a hungry cat fish wanted it before it could come out, inspite of 30 miles an hour outburst speed... For millions of years it has been called recycling organic food chain. We people let some human beeings carry this stuff , to sun dry it to make fertilizer. Do you know how urokinase is prepared? From human urine..

Shalini, You might have visited Hoode Bengre at Adam’s age. No such things are happening right now. As for toilets, government is helping people to build them. By the way which area of Mumbai you live. You have do a Bangra Dance to move around to avoid the thing you mentioned. Visit Malpe beach when you visit Udupi next time, it is one of the cleanest.

Beautiful great news. No doubt Kemmannu is wonderful we had happy times. only one thing to remember last time when I walked down on the beach I stamped shit every now and then on this beach. Do the fishermen have the same habit still? why they do not lay it in the toilets instead?
