The much awaited day is here. More than 70 players gathered this morning to play and remember their childwood where they used to play cricket matches in this historic ground. The play already started, some clicks from the spot.....
Revisiting the lost cricketing glory of Kemmannu as Vetaran Kemmannites set to organize a Re-Union match on December 22.
Kemmannu, Dec 19, 2019: The small coastal village of Kemmannu has a rich tradition of playing cricket as it was once the main games played in the area by the kids and youngsters for over a half century.
Oldest memories take us back to the early 70’s, when we had very good cricketers like brothers Nanda and Arun Shetty of Gujjerbettu, Arun Nambiar of Kemmannu and many others, who used to play full day 2 innings matches at those times. Those days most of the matches were played at the Gudiyam ground. Teams like Gujjerbettu, Kemmannu, Hoode, Thimman Kudru and Kambla Thotta were formidable at that era.
Later in the 80’s, with limited over’s cricket gaining popularity, Kemmannu had a Golden era of cricket with stars like Krishna Prasad Shetty (KP), Brian D’ Lima(Binnu), Yadav Kumar, Asif Mohammed, B.M. Zaffer, Alfred Crasto, Braan D’ Souza, Archi Lewis, Ashok, Mohan Thonse, Ashraf, Ismail with other ruling the roost. The Kemmannu combined team had an aura of invincibility and virtually won all tournaments it participated. The craze was such that youngsters were seen playing in every nook and corner of the village, maybe either in the play ground or on the foot paths.
What goes up,has to come down and that’s what happened to cricket in Kemmannu. The advent of computer and Electronic gadgets took the youngsters away from play grounds and made them to remain indoors. Now a days it is a rare sight to see children playing cricket in the fields or ground.
And to revive the old cricketing memories, Veteran Cricketers of yester years have come together and planned a grand 4 team tournament on Sunday December 22nd in Govt. Fisheries ground, where most of them played their cricket and honed their cricketing skills. The 4 teams will be led by veteran cricketers Alfred Crasta, Yadav Kumar, K.P. Shetty and Asif Mohammed. The teams will be ‘Kemmannu Warriors’, ‘Gudiyam Gangsters’, ‘Kamblathotta Bulls’ and ‘Kudru Tigers’.
The games will start at 9am sharp and organizers have requested cricket lovers to come, enjoy and have that nostalgic feeling of the era gone by.

I could remember good players like Columbus, Sadiq, Richard of those days. Probably they are the on who planted the seeds to blossom as beautiful trees in the later days.
Even after 3 decades people still remember our batting style! what can we ask more then this? (Thanks to Mr. Yogish-Kolalgiri’s comment)
