Print Kemmannu Panchayat gets decaying ’Keppa Thodu Canal’ cleaned
Kemmannu, April 07: ’Keppa Thodu Canal’ is one of the major canals of Thonse Panchayat. It’s length is over 3 kilometres, which starts from Thottam and joins River Swarna near Kambla thotta. The canal is useful to carry excess rain water to the sea. A mini dam is constructed near where the canal joins the river. Every year the dam is shut and in good old day the canal water was used for agriculture by farmers who have fields both sides of the canal.
The Waste Collection During the Cleaning.
The advent of plastic has changed the above equations drastically as people started dumping their plastic wastes apart from domestic waste to the canal. The Keppa Thodu bridge became the focal point as motorists carried all kinds of waste and dumped it down from the bridge.
The result was catastrophic as once the clean canal filled with waste and started decaying. As settlements rose, residents too contributed to the problem by throwing their waste to the canal. Unbearable filthy stench and mosquito menace make the life miserable for residents who live near the canal. Worms also started breeding compounding the situation.
Residents raised the issue in several Panchayat and Gramsabha meeting. The problem was so complicated as who will get down and clean this filth. However, the newly elected Panchayat Members got together and solved the problem by hiring 5 workers from Karkal and cleaned about 200 meters of the canal where it joins the river, where most of the waste was accumulated.
However, this looks like a temporary solution unless people will co-operate and manage their domestic waste themselves and local body make some efforts to collect and dispose the waste.
For the time being residents have heaved a sigh of relief and thanked the Panchayat officials and Members for a job well done.
In total over 4 trucks load of garbage was fished out, which will be shifted to municipality dumping yard and disposed off.

Last week I was on the way to airport around 11 PM, a bike rider from kodibengre was infront of our car and he thrown the garbage at Nejar openly even he is not bothered to throw the garbage infront of lights, means he is not even bothered that somebody is watching his act or can record his act.
Just an advise until panchayath can come up with complete solution lets keep some bins to put the garbage for such offenders, by doing that people can throw in that bin rather polluting the nature and will be easy for panchayat to dump those collected garbage rather bringing the team to collect the garbage from pond or canal.
Please maintain the same cleanliness and take appropriate measures to keep always clean.
This is a real issue facing many at different locations like kemmannu bridge, Nejar main road, hoode beach, bengre beach etc.
Without proper awareness and control from authorities it is difficult to maintain.
CCTV Monitoring and fines might help.
Now, maintaining garbage free canal is a huge task, as we often hear people saying "Where there is a will, there is a way.. look for that way...

Unless the panchayat act in this regard, garbage problem will continue to persist and spoil our beautiful place.
Please install cctv and catch the culprits and impose heavy fines. Please make arrangements for municipality vehicles to collect the garbage every day.
