Baby needs rare blood to stay alive

25ml of blood matching the baby’s DNA can save the baby’s life

A marathon public campaign is going on to save the life of a seven-month old baby boy suffering from a unique genetic disorder that requires a matching blood cell transfusion to save his life.

Baby Sijo, son of an Indian engineer working in Oman, has been undergoing treatment in Oman and back home in India to treat a genetic disorder called ‘Severe Combined Immuno Deficiency’, also known as ‘bubble boy disease.’ Doctors at Apollo Hospital in Chennai, where the baby is currently under treatment, are confident that the baby can come back to life if they get just 25ml of blood from someone with matching DNA.

The baby’s parents – K M Sijoy of Kozhikode and Ashwathy of Kuttippuram in Kerala -- made an appeal for help from the public for suitable blood so that the matching stem cell can be transplanted to cure the baby’s disease. The parents are overwhelmed by the phone calls and response from the public.

Though hundreds of donors have come forward to give their blood samples to save the baby’s life, none of them had blood that matched the baby’s DNA. After the baby’s plight was reported on social networking sites and the ‘Malayala Manorama’ newspaper printed a front-page appeal, and pain and palliative care volunteers spread the word about the requirement of just 25ml of blood, many NRI volunteers have come forward to donate blood, but that rare person with blood matching the baby’s DNA is yet to be located.

After the story was aired by a Dubai-based Malayalam FM radio station, some volunteers came forward to donate their blood and are exploring the possibility of sending their saliva samples for DNA testing. “Many callers were keen to help the baby but doctors said it is expensive to send saliva samples to Germany or USA for a DNA matching test. Just one test will cost about Dh3000 but some people are keen to join the blood sample collection drive,” said Shabu, head of news at Hit 96.7.

He said many Indian expatriates have expressed their readiness to help the NRI baby, and the message is spreading through social networking sites. Blood samples will be collected from the Palakkad, Ernamkulam and Kozhikode district headquarters on March 22, 23 and 24, according to the Pain and Palliative Care unit of Kozhikode.

Mobile units in UAE are also getting ready to collect blood samples as the probability of finding matching DNA is only one in 10 million, according to experts.

“We have collected the saliva of many potential donors to check whether their DNA matches that of the baby. The samples are sent to a lab in USA as the facility is not available in India,” said a source from the Pain and Palliative Care Unit of Kozhikode, which is spearheading the campaign.

“Camps are planned in major cities and colleges to collect saliva samples from volunteers willing to donate their blood. A Bengaluru-based voluntary group has started the campaign which is now spreading through social networking sites and the media. We are getting hundreds of calls from donors willing to help the baby,” said the source.

According to medical experts, ‘Severe Combined Immuno Deficiency’ is a primary immune deficiency. Its defining characteristic is usually a severe defect in both the T- & B-lymphocyte systems. This usually results in the onset of one or more serious infections within the first few months of life.

People living in the Maldives claim to have seen a "low flying jet" going over one of the islands on the morning of the disappearance of flight MH370.

Local website Haveeru says several residents report the sighting at around 6.15am on March 8.

They said that it was a white aircraft, with red stripes across it – which would roughly match a Malaysia Airlines aircraft.

"I’ve never seen a jet flying so low over our island before. We’ve seen seaplanes, but I’m sure that this was not one of those. I could even make out the doors on the plane clearly," said an eyewitness.

"It’s not just me either, several other residents have reported seeing the exact same thing. Some people got out of their houses to see what was causing the tremendous noise too."

Missing Malaysia Airlines flight 370 could now be in a Taliban-controlled base on the Afghanistan and north west Pakistan border, it has been claimed.

The search, now covering 11 countries, has so far offered very few clues on the whereabouts of the Boeing 777 which disappeared nine days ago from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

Experts are now in agreement that the plane was hijacked or sabotaged and one theory that has been put forward is that it is being kept in a Taliban area ready for use at a later date, according to the Independent.

The plane is believed to have flown either to the north west from the Malaysian peninsula or south west.

If it was the former, then it could be in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan or Tajikistan.

As part of the investigation police are looking into the backgrounds of captain  Zaharie Ahmed Shah, 53, and co-pilot Fariq Abdul Hamid, 27, and their homes have been searched.

Analysis is also taking place on flight simulators built by Mr Shah and found at his home.

A flight engineer who was a passenger on the plane is also being investigated.

Malaysian national Mohd Khairul Mari Selamat, 29, is believed to have worked for a private charter jet company and is being probed as authorities look into anyone who had technical flying knowledge.

Police are investigating a flight engineer who was among the passengers on board the missing Malaysian Airlines jet.

The man, named as Mohd Khairul Amri Selamat, 29, is a Malaysian who is believed to have worked for a private jet charter

It comes as authorities focus on the pilots and anyone else on board who had technical flying knowledge.

"Yes, we are looking into Mohd Khairul as well as the other passengers and crew. The focus is on anyone else who might have had aviation skills on that plane," a senior police official with knowledge of the investigations said.

Meanwhile a senior US congressman has said the disappearance of the aircraft was no accident.

Congressman Michael McCaul, Chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, said the disappearance of flight MH370 on March 8 "was an intentional, deliberate act to bring down this airplane."

Congressman McCaul told Fox News that there were a lot of "warning signs" surrounding the flight, including stolen passports used by two Iranian passengers and one-way tickets bought with cash "that hijackers are known to do."

"We don’t have any evidence that this is terrorist related, although you can’t rule that out," he said.

"I think all the evidence is pointing towards the cockpit, towards the pilot and co-pilot."

Relatives of the 239 passengers and crew on board missing Flight MH370 are clinging to every shred of evidence their loved ones are still alive.

And last night they were given a major boost after the authorities admitted for the first time the missing Malaysia Airlines jet may have landed rather than crashed.

As the search, widened a senior official in Kuala Lumpur confirmed it was “possible” satellite signals from the plane could have been sent while it was on the ground.

That sparked hopes it may have been flown to a remote spot by hijackers who at some point will outline their demands.

But there were also fears for the safety of those on board after the FBI described the disappearance as “an act of piracy”.

The revelations came as pictures emerged of captain Shah, and co-pilot Hamid being searched before they boarded the flight at Kuala Lumpur airport on March 8, the day it vanished. The pair were routinely frisked then allowed to proceed.

"That means Flight MH370 could have reached as far north as Kazakhstan in Central Asia.

Police continue to probe the background of captain Shah, who was once pictured wearing a T-shirt declaring “Democracy is Dead”.

Officers yesterday examined a home-made flight simulator found at his house in Kuala Lumpur.

Malaysian transport minister Hishammuddin Hussein said: “Every day brings new angles, especially as we are focusing and expanding the search area.

“The search was already a highly complex, multi-national effort. It has now become more difficult. The area has been expanded and has changed. We are now looking at large tracts of land, crossing 11 countries as well as deep, remote oceans.

“The number of countries involved has increased from 14 to 25, which brings new challenges. This is a significant recalibration.”

Narendra Modi to contest from Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, Rajnath Singh from Lucknow

New Delhi: BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi will contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections from the Varanasi seat in Uttar Pradesh, the party has announced. Mr Modi replaces Varanasi sitting MP and senior leader Murli Manohar Joshi, who had reportedly put up a stiff opposition. (Read: Murli Manohar Joshi denies rift over Narendra Modi and his seat in UP)

Mr Joshi will now shift to Kanpur, where union minister and Congress leader Sriprakash Jaiswal has won the last three elections. (Jubilation in Varanasi as Narendra Modi declared BJP candidate)

"Grateful to the Party for giving me opportunity to contest the election from the holy city of Varanasi! An honour to contest from Varanasi, (sic)" Mr Modi tweeted soon after the announcement.(It’s an honour to contest from Varanasi: Narendra Modi)

Party president Rajnath Singh, who had won the last election from Ghaziabad, will contest from Lucknow, in place of Lalji Tandon. The incumbent party MP had reportedly indicated that he may vacate his seat only for Mr Modi. The constituency is prestigious because Lucknow is the capital of India’s most populous state, and because for many years, it was represented by the BJP’s gold standard for leadership, Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

The party has fielded senior leader Arun Jaitley from Amritsar in Punjab, replacing former cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu. Mr Sidhu was reportedly called by the party leadership during the day and offered an option of contesting from three other seats which he refused.

In the 2009 polls, the BJP had managed only 10 seats out of the 80 in Uttar Pradesh. The party hopes fielding Mr Modi from Varanasi will help it draw voters in UP, one of the most crucial states that sends 80 MPs to Parliament.

Sources say Mr Modi might also choose to contest from either Ahmedabad East or Vadodara in Gujarat, his home state. The BJP says the list for Gujarat would be finalised on March 19; the party’s senior-most leader LK Advani’s seat will also be announced then.

Varun Gandhi, BJP’s general secretary, will contest from Sultanpur. His mother Maneka Gandhi will be fielded from Pilibhit, which Varun had won last time.

Former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Uma Bharti, who has shifted her base to Uttar Pradesh, will fight from Jhansi.

Will talk about contesting against Narendra Modi today: Arvind Kejriwal

Bangalore: Will it be an Arvind Kejriwal vs Narendra Modi contest in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections? The Aam Aadmi Party chief has promised to talk about the issue today which has been a subject of intense speculation in the last few weeks.

"Many people asking me - "will i contest against Modi ji?" I will talk on this issue in today’s rally at Bangalore," tweeted Mr Kejriwal, who wraps up his two-day tour of Karnataka today.

This comes just a day after Mr Modi, the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate, was finally picked as the party’s Lok Sabha candidate from Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi seat, which is currently being held by his senior colleague Murli Manohar Joshi. (Read)

Mr Kejriwal now plans to address a rally from the very constituency, in a further sign that a face-off between the leading faces of the two parties in the Lok Sabha polls is imminent.

The 45-year-old had, earlier in the day, said that his party will put up a strong candidate against Mr Modi from the temple town, adding that a name hadn’t been decided yet.

The AAP has, in the last few weeks, dropped strong hints that Mr Kejriwal may fight Mr Modi if the latter contests from Varanasi, or anywhere outside Gujarat. Party leader Yogendra Yadav had, in fact, told NDTV that Mr Kejriwal "would be looking at where Mr Modi is contesting." Earlier, his colleague Manish Sisodia had also said, "Mr Kejriwal will ask Modi questions from Varanasi."

Mr Kejriwal, who resigned as the chief minister of Delhi after just 49 days in power, has so far remained non-committal on squaring off against Mr Modi. But the taxman-turned-activist-turned-politician hasn’t hesitated in investing a significant part of his campaign to attacking the Gujarat chief minister.

The one-year-old AAP will contest the national election for the first time since its dazzling debut in the Delhi polls in December on the back of an unconventional campaign and a promise to root out corruption and VIP culture.

Unfazed, Arvind Kejriwal fires yet another salvo at media

Unfazed by the criticism of his attack on media, Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday fired yet another salvo, questioning whether the media had the courage to show the “true story” about Narendra Modi’s Gujarat.

Speaking to reporters before kick-starting his roadshow in Bangalore, he accused the media of not bringing out the “truth” about the Gujarat Chief Minister before the people.

“Will the media have the courage to show Gujarat’s true story to the people of the country? There is a big question mark,” said Kejriwal whose comments against the media have brought him in the line of fire from media and political parties alike.

Kejriwal has sparked a controversy with his remarks that the whole media is “sold out” and media people will be sent to jail after an inquiry into the issue if AAP comes to power.

During the two-day tour, Kejriwal is also attending a Rs 20,000 per person dinner to raise funds for AAP. He will hold a roadshow in Chikkaballapur on Sunday before concluding the visit with a rally in Bangalore.

Charging the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate with ”cheating” people during his rallies, he said “that is what the people are saying. So far, the media has not brought out the truth about Modi before the people.”

Asked about the evidence to back his allegations about Modi, he said, the condition of farmers was “pathetic” as their land had been snatched. “There is a publicity going around that Modiji is a saviour of farmers. No Modiji is not the saviour. The country’s farmers have been told a lie.”

“If the farmers come to know of it, none of them will vote for Modi. I am not generalising. I have seen it myself in Gujarat. Therefore, I ask the media to show the truth.”

Kejriwal said the media should show the “real conditions” prevailing in Gujarat. “They should show the rule of corruption and bribe in Gujarat. Before Delhi (Assembly) elections, the media had done a sting operation against us.

Did we say anything. Modiji is telling big lies to the nation which is a very big conspiracy.”

Asked to name the channels which he had alleged were being paid for Modi’s coverage, he refused to answer.
