Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao arrived in New Delhi on Wednesday on a three-day visit which he said was to promote friendship and expand cooperation between the two countries that have seen comprehensive and rapid progress. Immediately after his arrival, Mr. Wen said, “My current visit is aimed at promoting friendship, expanding cooperation, building on our past achievements and opening up new dimensions for mutual benefit and common development of the two countries.”

JODHPUR: While it’s splitsville for Liz Hurley and Arun Nayar after three rocky years of marriage, Hollywood’s celebrity couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have decided to cement their bond further. Like Liz and Arun, who tied the knot according to Hindu customs in Jodhpur, the Brangelina couple, too, are looking to take the ’pheras’ in this historic Rajputana city. British news portals have reported that the Hollywood royalty is planning a Hindu wedding in the New Year under the supervision of their spiritual guru, Ram Lal Siyag. Siyag, 84, the founder-patron of Jodhpur-based Adhyatma Vigyan Satsang Kendra, neither confirmed nor denied the news.

Yakshagana fest off to a colourful start in Udupi

Udupi: The students Yakshagana festival titled Kishore Yaksha Sambhrama got off to a colourful start with a lively performance of the Yakshagana episode “Babruvahana Kalaga” at Rajangana here on Tuesday. This 18-day festival, organised by the Karnataka Yakshagana Bayalata Academy, Yaksha Shikshana Trust and Paryaya Shiroor Math, began on Tuesday, will culminate on January 3.

Karate championship from December 18

Udupi: The Karate Budokan International will be organising the fifth State-level Karate Championship 2010 at Rajangana here on December 18 and 19. Organising Committee general secretary Nityananda Kemmannu told presspersons that over 500 Karate students would be participating in the 150 categories of Karate competitions during the championship.

BPCL hikes petrol prices by Rs. 2.96; IOC, HPCL to follow suit

Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) on Tuesday hiked petrol prices by about Rs. 2.96 a litre effective midnight tonight, and other state-owned oil companies Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) will follow suit on Wednesday. The Oil Ministry on Tuesday gave the three companies a go-ahead to raise petrol prices after international crude oil prices touched $90 per barrel.

India moots tie-up on ‘contract farming’

MUSCAT: Oman could strengthen domestic availability of food grains by entering into ‘contract farming’ with Indian farmers, a senior Indian government official suggested here yesterday. “Indian law does not allow foreign companies to buy land there and therefore, Omani companies can enter into a contract farming relationship for producing the type of crop they want,” Montek Singh Ahluwalia, deputy chairman of Planning Commission, told Times of Oman in an exclusive interview.
