French retail giant Carrefour today announced its entry into the Indian market by opening its first cash and carry store for wholesale distribution. The new store -- Carrefour Wholesale Cash&Carry -- in New Delhi will house over 10,000 stock keeping units and cater to professional businesses, institutions, restaurants and local retailers.

A Citibank manager accused of cheating investors of Rs.100 crore after promising to double their deposits continues to be on the run, police said on Wednesday, a day after one of India’s biggest banking frauds came to light. Haryana Police has issued a lookout circular for Shivraj Puri, the bank’s relationship manager here, after failing to track him down.

Nine vehicles worth ’43 lakh recovered

In a major haul, N R Police claim to have busted a gang of three inter-state thieves adept at vehicle theft. Nine vehicles-eight cars and a goods van worth ’ 43 lakh have been recovered from them. This was disclosed to the media on Wednesday here by Police Commissioner Sunil Agarwal. The accused are identified as Viji alias Patrick, aged 38 years, car mechanic, resident of Dr Rajkumar Road, Syed Ali alias Syed, 31, mechanic, A J Block, N R Mohalla and Nandan N R, 27, K C Layout, sales executive manager with a private cellular service provider, of the city.

Controversial godman Swami Nithyananda was on Wednesday greeted with fierce black-flag protests at his home-turf, Tiruvannamalai, in Tamil Nadu. Manama: A Gulf Air plane flying from Bahrain to Paris was forced to make a u-turn to offload unruly passengers, the company has said. "Three passengers of a group of five on Gulf Air flight GF 019 from Bahrain to Paris on December 28 behaved in an unruly and disruptive manner onboard after the flight took off from Bahrain airport," Katherine Genowefa Kaczynska, senior manager of corporate communication, told Gulf News.

Rs 400 crore fraud uncovered at Citibank’s Gurgaon branch

A big banking fraud was uncovered at the Gurgaon branch of Citibank that saw a bank employee fraudulently diverting an estimated Rs 400 crore from 20 accounts of high-networth clients. Citibank has already lodged an FIR and commenced internal investigation into the fraud. "We recently initiated an investigation into a certain set of suspicious transactions based on documents forged by an employee involving a few accounts in our Gurgaon branch," a Citi India spokesperson said in a statement.

An ultra-fast computer chip that is 20 times faster than the ones found in the current desktop computers has been created by scientists. Modern PCs have a processor with two, four or sometimes 16 cores to carry out tasks. But the central processing unit (CPU) developed by the researchers effectively had 1,000 cores on a single chip, Daily Mail reported Tuesday.

Expatriate workers with six-month visa ban in UAE get reprieve

In a bid to reform its labour market, the UAE has introduced a new work permit which will allow foreign workers, including Indians, in the country to switch jobs after two years without facing a six-month ban for leaving their work. Expatriate workers in the UAE who have received a six-month ban on leaving their jobs recently will be able to obtain new work permits from the beginning of the new year, a senior official has said.

Mahindra to raise prices of all models in January

Auto-maker Mahindra and Mahindra on Tuesday said it will raise the prices of its products across all categories in January due to increase in commodity rates. "There will definitely be a price increase in January and we are finalising it at present... It will be across all categories (passenger and commercial vehicles)," Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) Senior Vice-President (Sales and Customer Care, Automotive Sector) Arun Malhotra told reporters here.

India plans to launch 30 satellites in next decade

India is mulling to launch at least 30 earth observation satellites in the next one decade, a senior official at the Department of Space (DoS) said on Tuesday. "We expect not less than 30 satellites," Director of the Hyderabad-based National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), under the DoS Dr V Jayaraman said. NRSC is responsible for remote sensing, satellite data acquisition and processing, data dissemination, aerial remote sensing and decision support for disaster management.
