A Pakistani driver allegedly stole 105 gold bullion bars worth more than Dh2 million from his employer and fled the UAE, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

AA, 46, had found out where his employer SJ kept the keys of the safe where he stored the gold bullion. He then took the safe’s keys, stole the gold and his passport and fled the UAE.

On June 2, at around 10am, the employer SJ, 30, Afghan businessman, called his driver AA to pick him from Sharjah to go to Dubai.

“I called him several times but his mobile was switched off. I asked the cook about the driver and he told me that he had seen the driver leaving the house carrying a plastic bag and told me that he is going to visit a friend and will be back before the noon prayer.

“Two hours later, I called him but his mobile was still off. I did not pay attention to that and in the evening I returned home. I enquired about the driver but the cook told me that he had not come back. Since I suspected his absence, I opened the safe and discovered that 105 gold bullion bars and the driver’s passport were missing from the safe,” the trader told investigators.

Police investigated the businessman’s complaint and arrested a Pakistani guard who identified as ‘A Ali’ after getting information about him possessing gold bullion. Ali admitted that on June 3 a compatriot identified as DA had come him at a construction site of a villa in Muhaisina and gave him bars of gold and asked him to keep them with him.

The 39-year-old guard put 60 bullion bars in a container and buried them in the sand.

Police also arrested DA, 29, who admitted that his relative the driver AA had stolen the gold from his employer.  The driver had asked him to keep the gold with him and promised to help him get a driving licence.

DA admitted to hiding the stolen gold with the help of A Ali.

The fugitive driver is being prosecuted for theft while A Ali and his relative DA are accused of possessing stolen gold.

The court will give its sentence on November 4.
