Print MANGALURU: Discalced Carmelite (OCD) nun Blessed Mariam Baouardy or Mary of Jesus Crucified, co-foundress of Kankanady OCD, , will be canonized by Pope Francis May 17.
She was the first OCD to come to India 1870 and three years after her death in Bethlehem the Kankanady OCD, popularly known as Cloistered Carmel, was established through philanthropy of a Frenchman. Incidentally, this was the first OCD to be established in India, which now has 34 OCDs. Another co-founder of Kankanady OCD is Bishop Marie Ephrem.
Rev Fr Pius James D’Souza, OCD, Rev Mother Marie Celine, OCD, said the canonisation will be celebrated after a few days after the actual event at the OCD both spiritually and culturally.
Mariam, born in Ibillin, Palestine, played an important role in the identification of the Biblical Emmaus due to a private revelation in April 1878. She died on August 26, 1878 in Bethlehem, when she was 33, from a cancer. The cause of canonization started on May 18, 1827 and would culminate with the decree of heroic virtue on November 27, 1981. She was beatified by Pope John Paul II on November 13, 1983 and is scheduled to be canonized on May 17.
Giving details of how the OCD was established, Marie Celine said the first batch, six sisters came along with three Apostolic Carmelites but three of them died on the way. They were accommodated at St.Ann’s Convent near Holy Rosary Cathedral where they lived for 12 years. It was here that Mariam manifested her paranormal phenomenon of levitation and prophecy. Unable to interpret these signs rightly, she was asked by the concerned authorities to return to France.
The Karnataka Goa Province of Carmelites owes much to this Carmel. This Carmel in its 142 years of history has given birth to Trichy Carmel, Shembaganur Carmel and that of Hassan.
