Print MANGALORE: The Dakshina Kannada District Congress Committee has submitted a memorandum to the Commissioner of Police in connection with the complaint of alleged case of conversion reported on Wednesday.
Following a complaint lodged by Nitin Pujari (18) of Puttur regarding attempts to change his caste, the Urwa police have registered a case of robbery, kidnapping, illegal confinement, life threat and creating enmity between religious groups against Julian Lobo of Ashoknagar. In the memorandum, vice-president of the district unit Ivan D’Souza said a separate officer must be appointed to investigate the “false” complaint against Mr. Lobo, who owns “Jillu’s Caterers” shop in Central Market area. The memorandum said Mr. Lobo and his wife were “falsely implicated” in the case and that conversion had not happened. The complaint had been filed against the couple because of vested interests, it said. A woman named Maria claiming to be Mr. Lobo’s sister-in-law told presspersons that the complainant had taken a loan of Rs. 2,000 from her brother-in-law, leading to a dispute. She claimed that the complaint was not attacked as alleged. Asked about Ms. Maria’s claim about the loan, Commissioner of Police Seemant Kumar Singh said there were many allegations and counter-allegations and that only an investigation would reveal what had actual taken place. He said Assistant Commissioner of Police (City) Ravindra had been appointed as the investigating officer, although the investigation had begun on Wednesday itself. He added that he had received the memorandum from the Congress.
