Commando teams to be set up in all police ranges

Print In the backdrop of heightened security concerns, the State police will be increasing the units of Garudas (specially trained commandos) at seven police ranges and four police commissionerates, said Additional Director-General of Police (Law and Order) Alok Mohan.
He told presspersons on Wednesday that the police have already chalked out a plan to increase the number of units. Presently, there are 160 personnel in the Garuda force, which was increased in 2010.
The force, which comes under the Internal Security Division, has personnel trained on the lines of National Security Guards.
These personnel are used for specialised anti-terrorist operations and other emergency situations.
The new Garuda units are proposed to come up in the Southern Range headquarters in Mysuru, Western Range in Mangaluru, Eastern Range in Davangere, Central Range in Bengaluru, Northern Range in Belagavi, North-Eastern Range in Kalaburagi, and the new police range headquarters in Ballari. These units are also proposed to come up in Mysuru, Mangaluru, Hubballi-Dharward, and Belagavi police commissionerates.
Mr. Mohan said each unit will have 40 physically fit personnel, who will be provided specialised training at Kudlu in Bengaluru.
