Terming the Ishrat Jahan encounter as fake, former Union home minister P Chidambaram said on Tuesday that it was incomprehensible that the letters written to the Attorney General (AG) regarding the case, and his reply, went missing. He said one first needed to understand who was going to benefit if these papers went missing.

It was discovered sometime in March that certain pages from the Ishrat Jahan files were missing. Chidambaram was addressing a press conference after filing his nomination papers for the upcoming election to the Rajya Sabha seat from Maharashtra. The former minister said those papers vindicated his stand on the issue, and that he wanted to place all those documents on record.
Chidambaram said that when it was revealed that the police killed Ishrat Jahan and others, and planted Rs2.60 lakh near the bodies, he filed a supplementary affidavit. The Modi government then termed it the "second" affidavit, even though the first one was not cancelled, he added.

Chidambaram said the supplementary affidavit was filed only after Judge Tamang’s report came out, and it had only 5-6 paragraphs. He reiterated that it was a fake encounter, which was conducted in the middle of the night, a fact that has been well recorded in the findings of the judiciary.
PC, Rane file nomination papers

Along with ormer Union home minister P Chidambaram, former chief minister Narayan Rane also filed his nomination papers for the election to the MLC seat on Tuesday. Rane also demanded the resignation of revenue minister Eknath Khadse over corruption charges. Criticising the state government for its failure on all accounts, Rane said Khadse needed to resign immediately, as he was facing allegations every other day.

Many prominent leaders, including former chief minister Prithviraj Chavan, former Union home minister Sushilkumar Shinde and state unit president Ashok Chavan, accompanied Chidambaram and Rane during the filing of nomination papers.

Narayan Rane’s total declared wealth in the election affidavit, including movable and immovable assets, comes to be around Rs73 crore, while P Chidambaram owns nearly Rs96 crore. As far as movable property is concerned, Rane’s possessions are worth Rs7.45 crore, while his wife, richer than him, has movable property worth Rs19.38 crore. Rane immovable property is worth Rs2.22 crore, while his wife has immovable property worth Rs20.96 crore. P Chidambaram, on the contrary, is richer than his wife in terms of movable property. Chidambaram has movable property worth Rs42.95 crore, while his wife has property worth Rs11.23 crore. Chidambaram’s has immovable property worth Rs4.25 crore, while his wife is richer than him with immovable property worth Rs25.03 crore in her possession.
