Special Diabetic Foot Clinic Inaugarated in Udupi

Udupi: Dr TMA Pai Hospital Udupi established a comprehensive diabetic foot clinic in collaboration with Department of Physiotherapy, along with Department of Medicine, and Department of Surgery. Announcing the opening of the Diabetic foot clinic, Dr Parvati V Bhat Medical Superintendent Dr T M A Pai Hospital Udupi said that “Diabetic Foot Clinic renders services with advanced neurological, musculoskeletal and vascular assessment, plantar pressure measurement, and conservative management of diabetic foot care, offloading footwear, footwear prescription and also foot ulcer care”. 

A special diabetic foot evaluation package is now available for Rs 350/- which includes peripheral neuropathy assessment, musculoskeletal assessment, peripheral vascular assessment, foot education and counselling, added Dr Parvati Bhat.

Dr G Arun Maiya, Professor, and certified clinical podiatry specialist, Department of Physiotherapy, School of Allied Health Sciences Manipal is the recipient of the prestigious grant WDF 15: 941 project titled “Diabetic foot care: stepping ahead”. The Establishment of advanced foot clinic and other primary and peripheral level clinics are important components of the project. As per District Health and Family Welfare Office estimates, the prevalence of diabetes is 14% in Udupi district. India has estimated 69.2 million adults living with Diabetes mellitus. Every 30 seconds, 2 people get their lower limb amputated globally and in Indian scenario, diabetic foot care is largely neglected. Also, healthcare providers too aren’t adequately aware of foot care.

According to Dr G Arun Maiya 65% of amputations could have been prevented by proper foot care, early identification and treatment for people living with diabetes mellitus. In an attempt to prevent such issues, under the project, advanced diabetic foot clinic in Kasturba Hospital, Manipal is being established with advanced evaluation and care through multi-disciplinary approach by department of diabetic foot care, Medicine, Surgery, Nutrition and other peripheral level foot clinics in few community centres of Department of Community Medicine, across Udupi Taluk. We would like to initiate secondary level foot clinic in Dr TMA Pai Hospital, Udupi. Through this, we will strive to alleviate the suffering pertaining to foot complications among people with diabetes.
