Print All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi commenting on the majority verdict of Supreme Court ruling on triple talaq here on Tuesday said that the judgment is not unanimous but said that social change has to come from the society as there will be difficulties in implementing it. He said that his party would come out with its opinion after going through the entire judgment which ran into hundreds of pages.
“The number of instant talaq cases is very less, by Gods grace the number will further come down in the near future. Instant Talaq is, in fact, a bad practice. Even the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) which has gone to different places in the country has urged people not to give Talaq in a hurry as it is evil in it," Asaduddin said. “I reiterate that laws and judgments will not have the desired effect if the reforms have not come from the society. It is the Muslim community must come forward and strengthen hands of AIMPLB in bringing social reforms.
"It is fine that the Supreme Court has called Triple Talaq unconstitutional, but if any Muslim woman says that she is not willing to stay in a marriage, what she can do now," he asked. He opined that the issue of drafting legislation will not arise now as it has become a minority opinion.
Answering to a question on the BJP terming the judgment as historic for the freedom of Muslim women, Asaduddin said that whether the same BJP would do anything for those widows whose husbands were lynched by Gau Rakshaks. "Why not a legislation, why not budgetary allocation for remarrying widows and abandoned women in the country, particularly those who occupy high echelons but leave their wives in dire straits,” he said. What is the fun of performing Raksha Bandhan by widows if you can’t get them re-married," Asad wanted to know.
